Sophomore forward Kandace Davis scored 12 points and tallied nine rebounds to lead Towson (2-0) to a 76-55 win over Norfolk State University (0-1) Friday at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. The victory was Towson's sixth straight non-conference win and eighth consecutive over MEAC opponents.
Balance on the offensive side of the ball was key to the Towson victory as three Tigers, including Davis, scored in double figures for a second straight game. Freshman Simona Petronyte and sophomore Dovile Miliauskaite each scored 10 points for the Tigers, and 11 of the 12 players on the Towson roster scored at least once against the Spartans Friday.
"[Balance] is something that we definitely strive for. It's our intention and a lot of it is lead by Alis [Freeman] and Shanae [Baker-Brice] distributing the basketball," head coach Joe Mathews said. "It's our emphasis on the offensive end to share the ball. We feel like we have good weapons and we feel that anybody on the floor can score at any given time. That's going to make it more difficult to guard."
Norfolk State freshman guard Natasha Huntley hit a 3-pointer with 1:52 remaining in the first half to cut the Towson lead to 26-22.
From there, the Tigers went on a 25-8 run, capped by an Alexis Abraham 3-pointer, to give Towson a 51-30 lead deep into the second half.
Thus far, Towson has been able to find success on both ends of the court, despite starting a young lineup.
Against Norfolk State, Abraham, a sophomore, and Petronyte were inserted into the starting lineup, which included three sophomores and two freshmen.
The veterans, who recognize what is best for the team, have embraced the youth movement that Mathews has chosen to take.
"Alis, Jamell [Beasley] and Shanae are my captains… I was looking forward to the captains showing great leadership and I wanted them to understand a lot is expected from them," Mathews said. "I wanted them to understand [that the] opportunity to play isn't given because you are a captain and they have more than just playing responsibilities"
Towson is off during the Thanksgiving holiday and returns to action Sunday, Nov. 25 at Duquesne at 2 p.m.
