Hundreds of students lined up on the third floor of the University Union Wednesday night for the fifth annual Taste of Towson, sponsored by Housing and Residence Life.
The event featured over 20 local establishments including Papa John's Pizza, Towson Best, and Ridgely & Ferrens. Vendors set up tables distributing free samples, menus, and coupons.
By the time the doors to the Chesapeake Rooms opened at 6 p.m., the line had roped around the third floor, past the elevators, conference rooms and restrooms. The event is routinely one of the most popular in the beginning of the year.
"As someone from out of town, it was a nice event to get me acquainted with the local restaurants," theatre arts graduate student Jessica Knoerl said.
It was Knoerl's second time attending Taste of Towson.
"The array of food this time is much better than the first year [that I was here]," she said. "It's more diverse."
Students generally had few complaints about the event.
"Not enough tables. Other than that, it's great," junior speech pathology major Mallory Butler said.
Senior exercise science major Elan Hanopole said he enjoyed the variety.
"I like it because you get to eat dinner for free and it's like buffet-style, a nice mix and a wide variety of things," he said. "Look at my plate here, it's packed with all kinds of stuff. I've got hamburgers, dumplings, pizza, pickles. It's awesome."
Freshman Anyra Richards said that she forgot the event was occurring and arrived at the room as the vendors were packing up.
She said she regrets getting there late, but enjoyed what was left of the food.
"The chicken wings are pretty good and the spinach artichoke dip, that was pretty good, but I guess we missed the whole event," she said.
Richards said she thought the event, like the other events in her first week at Towson, was great for pulling students together, "so I can get to know more people, and not be stuck in the dorm room all day."
Jerry Dieringer, director of Housing & Residence Life, said he thought the event went very well.
The event drew a "good crowd...[It's] a nice way for our students to sample a little bit of what Towson offers and gives them a reason to explore Towson knowing some of the things they can eat. It's a great opportunity for our students. These are the types of places our students love, so we're glad to offer it."
