I'd like to take a break from the new additions in the mall to focus on one of the rising trends I've seen gracing the racks of some of my favorite shopping locations.

When it comes to sweaters, hats, scarves and even shoes this season, knit is it.

Now, I'm not talking your grandma's itchy knit sweaters.

This winter, nothing is as warm while looking cool than cabled cardigans, ribbed scarves and knit berets.

It doesn't take much effort this season to put together an entire knit ensemble.

Sweaters and cardigans are probably the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of a knit outfit. Luckily, the college student on a budget doesn't need to spend a fortune to look fabulous in knitwear.

Forever 21 offers a variety of cheap knits. One of my favorites is the Knitted Short Sleeve Cardigan in charcoal ($27.80 at Forever 21). Not only is this sweater knit, it also combines two different cabling styles, a hood and oversize buttons to create a fun spin on a classic cardigan.

This sweater comes in such a versatile color that you can wear a variety of long sleeved T-shirts underneath to add a splash of color or pattern.

While full knit sweaters and cardigans are great, many items have simply taken on the appearance of knit to follow the trend while remaining flexible in fabric choice. Knit designs, such as cabling, ribbing or even patterns like the ever popular winter snowflake can give a top the knit look without the weight or sometimes itchiness that can accompany knits.

Knit accessories are the perfect way to keep warm on campus while still following one of this season's biggest hits.

What outfit can't be made complete with the addition of a scarf?

Whether short or long, wrapped around the neck or tied to the side, put away the plaids and argyles and pick up something knit!

Have a family member or friend that knits? Scarves are a fun and easy project for them that also make a great holiday gift for you. Take a trip with them to your local yarn store and pick out some colors and textures that match your personality.

It'll be a great way to bond with your Aunt Cindy while still acquiring a new knit for your ensemble. Don't forget the matching fingerless gloves!

Knit hats are another way to add a splash of texture to an outfit that might not be able to take on a bigger knit item.

The Brynn Chunky Knit Beret in black ($14.50 at dELiAs) is a cheap knit that goes with essentially any outfit.

And another great feature of knit caps is that due to their looser fit, they don't give you hat hair!

Even shoes have jumped on the knit train.

The ever-popular UGG brand has combined knitwear with boots to create The Cardy ($139.99 at Journey's).

UGGs are more expensive on the knit line, however. If you're not in the mood to splurge, stick to simple knits.

If you really want to find your own knit look, why not take up knitting for yourself?

Look around campus: you can often see girls sitting on the hill outside Speaker's Circle talking or studying, needles in hand. A handcrafted knit adds flair to your ensemble store-bought knits can't come close to.
