Eight bands performed at The Greene Turtle on York Road Friday night for XTSR's "Rock the Benefit" concert to raise awareness for autism.

The six-hour event, which featured Towson's own Play By Play, was set up to raise awareness about the disorder and raise money for medical research.

"I'm just big on helping people," Kristen "Hollywood" Long, the event's coordinator, said. "People don't know [autism is] a big deal; you could be talking to an autistic person and not even know it."

XTSR teamed up with Goucher Radio for the event. Both organizations said that they felt a concert was the perfect way to both gather interest in local bands in addition to raising money for the cause.

The bands featured in the event were Fortune's Foe, The Carbon Kin, No Compromise, Anierin, Failure to Excel, Arden, OutReach and Play By Play.

"We were happy to help a good cause and just to get a show," Play By Play front man and Towson freshman Trevor Green said. The event was the band's first performance with new guitarist Alex Libby, also a Towson freshman.

The concert started later than intended, but soon picked up steam and grabbed the attention of everyone at The Greene Turtle, whether they had come for the concert or not. Long said that was pleased to see the concert become successful, both as a showcase for local bands and a benefit for a worthy cause.

"We thought this would be a great way to raise awareness for this prominent, but often ignored disease," she said.
