The floor was filled with dancing and loud music as students crowded into the University Union Paws lounge area for an evening of smooth R&B.

Urbanfest, hosted by the Campus Activities Board drew around 350 students to the "Friday Night Live" event.

"Last year we had Mambo Sauce, so this year we just wanted to expand on that and have something for people who like both go-go music and R&B," Kim Smith, CAB's programming chair for the event, said.

The event featured DJ Mo'Phiya and Brandon Hines. New Impressionz was also scheduled to play as the first band of the evening, but did not perform at the last minute due to communication errors.

"They arrived without their drums and their percussion. We can't provide that and we let them know that in advance. It was just miscommunication," programming coordinator for the office of student activities Bridget Chase said.

Some students attended the event just for New Impressionz and were let down by the fact that the band wasn't going to perform.

"I'm a little disappointed," Morgan Garrett, a sophomore nursing major, said.

Garrett went to Urbanfest with fellow sophomore Tyesha Steele, who, while also disappointed, still enjoyed the event.

"It's OK. Brandon Hines is cute, and he's dancing up there, so it's an OK evening," Steele said.

Hines was brought to Towson to perform after being contacted by Smith, who said she thought his style of music would be well-received by students.

"He's not really a famous singer but... we thought it would be something different for people on-campus," Smith said.

Jen Summann, a freshman elementary education major, expressed that she enjoyed the music and the dance floor.

"I wanted to come out and be with friends and have a good time," she said. "It's pretty good so far. They're picking good music, so I'm having fun just hanging out."

Chase said that she thought the different style of music was able to bring in a lot of students and that the event was a success.

"We've had a ton of people here and they're all dancing to the music. We've never done an R&B show before, so that was something new for us to try. I think it's a good thing," she said.

Smith also said that Urbanfest was very successful - approximately half of the 350 wristbands needed to get into the event were handed out within the first half hour - and that she hopes that CAB can host a similar event in the future.

"Since it's coming after the pep rally, it's kind of like a nice little after-party for students," Smith said. "Hopefully we can have this again next year and it'll become a regular thing with different artists."
