For the first time, Towson anime watchers, cosplayers, artists and gamers will have their own convention to celebrate a love for all things related to the Japanese art form.

Towson Anime, with co-sponsors Campus Activities Board, TU Gaming Organization and the Asian Arts and Culture Center, will host Tigercon, Towson's first anime convention, this Saturday, Nov. 1 in the University Union.

The event is free and lasts from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Tigercon chair Monika Grigore has been planning the event since last semester when she was president of Towson Anime.

"At Towson, I've run into a lot of anime fans or people that are at least interested in it in some way," Grigore said.

"There are so many events that happen at TU that cater to every kind of person... but we felt there was something lacking for those interested in what you might call 'geek culture.' That's why we did Tigercon."

One of the main reasons Grigore said she wanted to have an anime convention at Towson was because of her love of the atmosphere it provides for fans.

"It's the kind of place you can walk into, not know a single person, and still feel completely comfortable in the knowledge that no matter what, someone here is going to be stranger and or more eccentric than you.

"It's like knowing that you could stand in the middle of the hallway, put your arms out, and someone will see you and give you a hug just for the hell of it, because it's a [convention,]" Grigore said.

Tigercon will include discussion panels starting at 11 a.m.

"Panels range in topic from Webcomics to character design and music," Grigore said.

There will also be a cosplay contest.

Cosplay, or "costume play," is a type of performance art in which fans dress as a character from a favorite comic, graphic novel, movie or video game, and reenact scenes from that character's genre, or just spend the day in their persona.

The rules for the cosplay contest, as well as registration forms, are available at the official Tigercon website, www.tigercon.org.

Anime screenings, an anime dating game, a video game room, a cosplay café and concerts featuring former Towson student Daniel "Lucas" Park, Austell "DJ ASU" Callwood, as well as comedy performances by the Geek Comedy Tour, will occur throughout the day.
