Your A Idiot: You choose!
Towson University Professor Richard Vatz
The distinguished professor of persuasion and rhetoric failed to make a convincing argument in opposition of younger persons’ right to vote. The mustachioed University Senate member suggested that younger individuals should not be afforded the right to vote because, he claims, many young voters will change their voting habits from liberal to conservative as they age. He further suggested that only members of the military or those with jobs should have the right to vote. Despite his ridiculously awesome mustache and vintage wardrobe, I’ll allow you, the readers, to rip his idiocy apart.
Towson University Marching Band
While our football team came up short in their performance during the homecoming game, our fans and band did little to help. While I admire the hours of work that the band puts into their craft, and though I thoroughly enjoy the halftime and post-game routines, the band has not been doing the football team any favors. The band, without fail, will play music during every offensive possession.
Any actual football fan knows that making noise while the offense has the ball is a big no-no! And it’s not like the band had to be quiet for long, with the Tigers fumbling the ball away four times. Let’s hope the pep band better understands the intricacies of college basketball fandom.

In the past few games, the opposing team’s offense has been too quick for us to be able to fit any music in during those plays. Would you rather us not play at all? We aren’t allowed to play during most time outs because of the video board and advertising spots, so sometimes us on defense is the only time to play. What’s the point of us being there if we’re silent in the stands?
I conduct the pep band for women’s basketball games, so would you like to use this opportunity now to tell me how to do my job? Or would you rather wait until there’s only one game left in the season to do so in public circulation?
Personally, I think the towerlight is the idiot of the week because they did a whole article on Homecoming and failed to picture the marching band, which was the only group besides the football team that stayed until the very end.
Oh yeah, and we played well…which is more than the football team can say.
Just sayin.
the real idiot(s) of the week should be the football team… I guarantee even if we didn’t play at all they still wouldn’t win, and we sit out there at every homegame in the cold to watch them lose. Thanks Towson Tigers Football!
Wow. As a TU alumnus and former marching band member, I am sadly disappointed that “The Towerlight” would stoop so low as to degrade the university’s marching band. Do you really have nothing better to do than trash the band?? This year I was excited to make it to the homecoming game. The marching band was very entertaining; they played well and got the crowd cheering during a very boring and badly played game. In fact, they did more for the fans than the cheerleaders did!! No, they’re not suppose to play at certain times, but they stopped playing and started singing instead at those times, and even had the crowd singing with them! Plus, they had an AWESOME 1/2 time show AND performed their entire show AFTER the game…. although I’m sure you missed that. Do everyone a favor and don’t report on something you clearly don’t understand. I agree…. “The Towerlight” is most definitely” the idiot of the week.”
Towerlight, lets hope YOU better understand the intricacies of time out playing rules before you make anymore unnecessary opinions or statements.
It is obvious the person who nominated the band has never been in the position of having to run the game. As Brendan mentioned, there are many, many, many things to coordinate during the game and if the band is playing it is because it has been approved by a top level official. Coordinating a 200+ piece band, technical needs, time-outs, commercials, and other needs is a mass effort that takes hours to plan.
On many occasions the football team has expressed their gratitude to the Marching Band and the basketball team presented the Pep Band with the “6th man” award. The band does make a difference and is one of the main reasons for increased school spirit in the past few years at Towson. The band has also been recognized by many top university members including the President, Provost and many others for our great contribution to our school and our outreach to the community.
I encourage the person who is responsible for this nomination to consider more thoughtfully a better candidate for this. Choosing a good student organization to bash in this section is immature and is a disservice to the Towerlight. The Tiger Marching Band reputation speaks for itself thanks to its director and its many committed members. Fight on Towson Tigers!
How dare you compare the Towson University Marching Band in any level with the “fans” of our football team? We do more for this football team than an empty stadium. You should be ashamed to blame the marching band for their spirit and pep for their school athletics. Without the band, the stands would be empty before half time, if not, way before the game even gets into the 2nd quarter! I think you, sir, are an idiot for thinking that one of the biggest organizations on campus has anything to do with the football teams record on the field. Don’t get me wrong, I believe our football team has done wonders this year even if it doesn’t show in the standings. They have come a long way from last year and I believe that with more experience that we’ll start to see good come out. But to highlight a group that is there for the team and not for the tailgates and the atmosphere of inebriated college students, I dare try you to be one of them and tell them what to do. I don’t think you understand what they do and why they do it. They don’t just have Towson University spirit, they are Towson University spirit and this University and college community needs that!
WHOA, WHOA, WHOA! Easy people, same team here! Look, there are big fixes and small fixes. Coordinating the band, cheerleaders, Doc’s Army, etc is a VERY small fix. The band does a great job getting people excited at the game. I’m still amazed by the ESPN cheer, but it’s just a matter of playing it at a different time.
Let’s work on organizing and collaborating instead of ripping each other’s groups.
let’s not trash the towerlight. kill the messenger; in this case, it’s the one and only, towson idiot himself. anyways, i’d vote for prof. vatz as the idiot of the week b/c he told it like it is like a gangsta and gangStArS are idiots.
Both are valid.
As a former TUMB member, I always wished we were more careful not to disrupt the offense. Getting a first down is worth playing for, but a lot of other things are not. Mostly though, I think calling them “idiots” is too much.
As for Vatz Domino, there are a lot of great arguments for why people should NOT vote. This is not one of them. My family has always been pretty right-leaning, and three of the five eligible voters in my family voted for Obama in 2008, including my 53-year-old Republican mother. She voted Republican again in the most recent elections. People don’t stop changing their minds when they get older; they continue to change as the times change.
BTW voting is stupid because it does NOT matter, as much as all those celebrity D-bags want you to think it does. If you want to make a difference, help an old lady across the street instead of wasting 30 minutes on a struck-by-lightning chance of actually helping to elect a certain official who, when in office, will do whatever the hell he wants regardless of his campaign promises to those who voted him in.
