Letter: Parking debate continues

16 March 2011 No Comments

I respect that Mr. Abraham is upset about the parking situation on campus.

I can’t imagine anyone who isn’t. I myself have been ticketed on several occasions: once for parking in a visitor lot without a proper permit, and numerous times for failing to display my $275 permit.

And while this is not the same as being late to class and potentially missing pertinent information, it is indicative of the larger issue of a lack of easily accessible campus parking.

I can honestly say I meant Mr. Abraham no disrespect in my last “Letter to the Editor,” and in no way was I alluding to drunken behavior as a reason for being late.

I understand that not all college students are “traditional.” Both my parents went to college in their 30s and were forced to deal with many of these same issues. Imagine that your campus has three – yes, just three – parking lots, and no garages, while the university has a student body of over 10,000 and no on-campus housing.

This is the situation at Wilmington University’s main campus in New Castle, Del. If Mr. Abraham attended this campus and had a night class last week, he would have had to park in a grass field of an adjacent church that surely would have been submerged in a least a few inches of mud and water, and then proceeded to walk across campus in the pouring rain with no option of a shuttle. I am not using this example to shame Mr. Abraham into being thankful for having at least some option when it comes to parking. What is important here is that Towson is trying its best to manage the parking situation by offering shuttle services connecting its distant parking lots with the heart of campus, and progressing on building a new parking garage.

However, construction takes time, and we must all be patient and understanding of the university’s parking policies and regulations. As many of the website’s commenting readers pointed out, your permit does not guarantee you a spot in the garage; it simply permits you access to any of the commuter lots on campus.
