Brand New signed as last act for Tigerfest

27 April 2011 By Jeremy Bauer-Wolf, Arts and Life Editor 15 Comments

The Campus Activities Board has signed the final artist for this year’s Tigerfest: indie-rock band Brand New.

CAB assistant director Sam Silverman said that including Brand New with the artists already signed for Tigerfest should appeal to the entire campus population.

“We have one mainstream act, and we have two not so mainstream. Even if Brand New isn’t mainstream, they have a dedicated fan base,” Silverman said. “You’re never going to please everyone, but there’s something in it for everyone and everyone should be excited.”

Though Brand New will perform last in the line-up, Silverman said that CAB doesn’t consider the band to be a headliner.

“It’s definitely more of a festival feel,” she said.

CAB programming chair Andrew Rivera said he agrees with CAB’s choice to have a festival-style Tigerfest, but that it was not a purposeful decision.

“[A festival] was something that we considered, but ultimately based on the actual survey that we got from the students, a lot of people wanted one particular artist,” Rivera said. “We were pretty much pursuing [that artist] since December. However, they kind of played a lot of games and ended up not being able to come through for us, which was partially our fault for putting that much faith in one artist. And then we switched to someone else, we had faith in them, and they fell through, and it just kept happening over and over.”

Both Silverman and Rivera said they agreed that it’s impossible to please everyone on campus.

What do you think of this year's Tigerfest lineup (The Gentlemen, Far East Movement, Reel Big Fish, Brand New)?

“We have such a diverse student base. Some people like strictly indie music, and if you book someone huge, they’re going to be like, ‘Oh, more pop culture trash,’” Rivera said. “And if you book people that are smaller, people are going to be like ‘I’ve never heard of them before.’ But I feel like there’s a good mix of well-known artists and then artists that more indie.”

A DJ will also play at the outdoor concert in between acts, but the DJ has yet to be confirmed.

Silverman said she also encourages students to attend simply because tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non-students.

“We’re going to have four bands, a DJ, inflatables, food vendors, all for $10,” she said.

Brand New released their last CD, “Daisy,” in 2009. Tigerfest tickets are currently on sale in the Union box office. Event T-shirts are also available in the CAB office for $5.

Im glad that this article has cab taking more responsibility for the whole tigerfest issue. I’m annoyed when cab members on here tell other students that if they want change then they should do something about it and join cab if they have a problem. While that makes sense would you apply for a job at a fast food restaurant because someone messed up your burger? If that person’s job is to make your food then why do you have to take responsibility for their mistake? I realize this is an extremely loose analogy but still holds some validity.

TU students need to remember that CAB is run mostly by the students…who are volunteers…remember that.
CAB exec board are students first then CAB board members. Moreover they cannot be expected them to spend every waking minute catering to each of the 20 some thousand students at TU.
CAB works with what they are given and do their best to satisfy the greater student body. Honest there is no way they cannot please everyone.
The truth is that if you do feel they aren’t doing their job then you most definitely SHOULD join the organization.

You know what, CAB really came through on this one. It’s easy to criticize them, and I certainly did in the time between the Far East Movement and Reel Big Fish announcements. However, they really did a great job. We must keep in mind that while it is impossible to please everyone, I think this lineup has the best chance.

One thing I’m certain of…Reel Big Fish is gonna kick ass.

What it comes down to is the budget that the school gives for this event. Cab had about 150-200 k to put on the event including everything from the stage and lighting to booking the acts. A bigger more notable university like university of md college park gets a budget of about half million dollars to a little more. Bigger names cost bigger dolllazzzzz.

I’m glad that the whole Tigerfest issue is settled, but if they knew it was going to be different, they should have announced it instead keeping people in the dark than becoming hostile when people start asking questions. Hopefully, next year we won’t have the same problem.

Well I am one of the on the fence votes. I think RBF will be good though. Question I have is that why would Towson plan Tigerfest on the same day that MD is having Nelly perform at Bryd Stadium? All this careful planning they made before to avoid this and that but it still ended up falling on the same day as UMD’s concert… Next Time dont worry about that stuff. Just plan it on a Saturday that fits with a good artist’s schedule. But I will be at Tigerfest and looking to have a good time. PS: DJ in between performances is a GREAT idea. Keeps the party going!

Good job CAB :) I’m very excited for Tigerfest this year. Brand new is one of my absolute favorite bands and it’s exciting that we can get this kind of band at Tigerfest. We’ve been seeing a lot of rap lately, so I’m really really excited for this one!! I’m also really pleased with the mix of genres this year, everyone should definitely have something to look forward to. I would definitely expect a massive turnout this year.

    Dearest Towson University and CAB,

Thank you so much. I am a recent alumni that still lives in the area, and some of the most memorable days of my life came at Tigerfest. I was looking forward to Tigerfest significantly this year because I am getting ready to move away from the area this summer, and this would probably be the last time I would attend.

However, I was becoming nervous once I realized that an act had not been signed within a month of the event. Two years ago, when I was last on campus as a senior, the act had typically been announced around the beginning of the new year. And then, once I saw Far East Movement had been signed, I almost gave up hope entirely. As much as it sucks to be another individual complaining, I found myself thinking, “For goodness sakes, this is a college campus, not a middle school. Can’t we get a decent, credible artist?”

Then came the Reel Big Fish announcement, which already had me sold. While they may be a little out of date, that doesn’t change the fact that they put on a great show, and that they hold a tremendous amount of credibility as a headlining artist for a festival. They are up-beat, energetic, fun, talented, jam-oriented, and they were even one of the headliners for Warped Tour in recent years (not that I entirely credit Warped Tour as a legitimate musical venture, but they certainly hold more clout on the festival circuit than Tigerfest).

Brand New is simply a cherry on top. People dismissing them as a credible act are probably only familiar with their older music, a la “Your Favorite Weapon” and “Deja Entendu,” when the band was semi-popular amongst young “punks” (most of the kids at Towson now were in middle and high school when these albums were released). However, their 2 most recent albums, “The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me” and “Daisy” are true psychedelic punk masterpieces. I literally just saw them at Sonar last night, and the show was INCREDIBLE. They have a rabid, dedicated fan base, and I think they absolutely saved CAB’s butt this year in compiling an outstanding lineup for Tigerfest.

Thank you CAB. I think every student on campus should be excited for this event, from the Top 40 listeners to the emo kids to the jam band heads. Congratulations, honestly. The moment I was beginning to think Tigerfest would be chalked this year was the exact moment you guys came through and proved me wrong, and therefore you have much reason to be proud of yourselves. Long live Tigerfest!!!!!

I cant help but think that they were lucky to have an attractive lineup, and that it happened on accident. Brand new is a band that i would go after first.

Brand New is the only reason I’m going to Tigerfest.

I’m travelling from out of the area to go to this show, and my tickets are will call. Where can I pick them up?

  • Eric said:

The university union box office until like 4:30 I think. Or at the stadium from like 2:30 on
