Localist mimics social networking sites
This year there’s a new way for students to check out what’s new at Towson University.
Localist Towson is a calendar of events on the Towson homepage. It shows featured events, upcoming events and events that student groups will hold. Vice President of Student Affairs Deb Moriarty said it has a certain appeal students may like.
“I think students are going to love it. It’s very social media-like,” she said. “Students can say they’re planning to go to this event, link it to Facebook, and tell their friends.”
While the program benefits the University, it’s also meant to update community members, according to Moriarty.
“We think it will be phenomenal that anyone from internal or external community can get info on a specific event or what’s happening on campus,” she said.
With Localist Towson around, students will no longer have to access their e-mail accounts to view the Daily Digest for student events. Some students were pleased with the schedule itself.
“I think the Master Calendar is a great idea because students don’t have to search all over the website in order to find upcoming events,” sophomore electronic media and film major Aurielle Bryan said.
Senior mass communication major Zach Maskavich said he always deleted the Daily Digest, or “Daily Delete” as he called it, but may actually take a look at Localist Towson.
Moriarty said the Daily Digest won’t disappear, but will be used primarily for announcements. The new master calendar will have information on specific events. She said using the Daily Digest has been challenging in the past because if you looked for an event on Towson’s website, you couldn’t find it. With the master calendar, you can.
The Student Government Association played a role in the program’s creation, along with the Office of Technology Services. SGA President Matt Sikorski said OTS’ role was to give input on whether the program would be a viable, usable resource for Towson students.
“I truly believe this could be a game changer in terms of advertising for student groups and on-campus departments, as well as for students who are just looking for something to do,” he said. “There haven’t been resources like this website where you can customize your profile and follow events that fall under a certain category or a certain venue on campus. No more looking around at 900 different types of advertising, this can just be your one-stop hub.”
