Professor defends office hours

Adjunct professor Glen Schorr said he is accessible to students via text, phone call, email and face-to-face.

But Schorr prefers the old-fashion method, which lacks the use of any high-tech innovations when it comes to student communication.

He values his office hours.

Piazza is a new website in development that aims to save professors hours by allowing students and the professors to interact through the service, according to The Chronicle for Higher Education.

It’s said to be similar to an online study hall, where professors and teaching assistants can monitor questions and encourage students.

Schorr said even if Towson was to consider this, nothing can replace the two-way communication that phone calls and in-person meetings have.

He no longer allows electronic paper submissions, because there was a disconnection with students and his instructions.

“A lot of the points and direction were lost,” Schorr said. “I don’t think that’s the fault of professor or student. It’s just the nature of the communication. We live in an electronic age today. That being said, I don’t think anything honestly replaces one-on-one interaction with the student. Face-to-face communication or [something that involves a vocal communication] is how the best papers come out.”

Sophomore biology major Arian Safaie said there is more clarity in face-to-face meeting as opposed to emails.

“They both have their benefits,” he said. “Sometimes things are a lot clearer when in person.”

Other students prefer the availability and speed presented through electronic messages.

“When doing the work, sometimes questions arise and I know I won’t remember my professor’s office hours,” sophomore math major Tom Barbera said. “I like email. It’s the most convenient [way to contact a professor].”

Sophomore business major Ziggy Don said that some of his professors even prefer phone conversations to email.

“My professors offer periods of time in which they can be reached by phone for questions,” he said. “I like it. Calling is the most effective, because you can ask questions right away and get an answer right away.”
