What I learned in my week off meat
As my week of vegetarian eating comes to a close, I can say I have learned one thing; Veggie burgers are really not that bad.
Since I was off campus pretty much all weekend, I had to do some grocery shopping when I got home, as I had predicted.
I got a ton of vegetables, as well as a box of Morning Star veggie burgers.
The Morning Star burgers weren’t that bad, once I covered them in provolone and mayo.
But what was even better was the veggie burger that I got from Checkers. I went to a concert on Thursday at Ram’s Head, and on my way back, my friend and I stopped at a Checkers in the city.
I didn’t see veggie burgers on their menu, but I figured I would ask.
Granted, this is at 1 a.m., and the Checkers was about to close, so the workers were less than happy when we showed up at the window and I asked for a veggie burger.
The lady behind the counter looked at me like I had just asked her if they served goat or something, but she reluctantly went to look for one.
She found it, and then proceeded to ask me if I wanted bacon on it. Yes, the meat bacon. Who would get a veggie burger and get bacon on it?
Either way, when I bit into it, I thought I had been lied to and it actually was a veggie burger.
It actually tasted pretty good, much better than the Morning Star one I had tried.
The next day, I flashed back to standing in the line in West Village for the “Mongolian” food, and I threw some veggies together in a pan and mixed it with soy sauce.
That was also surprisingly good, even though I was hungry again, like, an hour later. Thankfully, I had Luna bars to bail me out later in the day.
As today is my first day back on meat, I will celebrate by going down to Paws to get a pretzel sandwich – meat on top of more meat.
However, I do know now that substituting a veggie burger every once in a while isn’t that bad, and eating a grilled portabella mushroom can actually be pretty filling.
So from now on, I pledge to cut out most of the red meat that I eat out of my diet, although it would be impossible for me to give up chicken.
I’ve got to have a Chick-fil-A sandwich now. on top of more meat.
