Expanding the Towerlight’s digital frontier

3 May 2012 By Shamus Kelley, Senior Editor One Comment

Well this is different.  A video producer who is now senior editor of The Towerlight?  How in hell does that work you ask?

It’s my goal to bring a whole new era to the paper, that being an era of stronger use of social media to grow The Towerlight’s audience.

While we publish twice weekly in print form, we also post all of our stories online and have a lot of exclusive content on our website, such as expanded photo galleries and video.

And I think that content should reach a wider audience than it currently does.

During my time as senior editor, I will be continually promoting The Towerlight’s web presence.

In this day and age there’s an audience for almost every kind of story and it’ll be my job to make sure those stories get read.

Whether that be linking them on Internet forums, on our brand new Towerlight tumblr – which we will be premiering soon, or just around Facebook, I will do what I can to make sure everything we post gets seen by the people who want to read it.

The other big thing I want to tackle is recruitment.  The Towerlight is an amazing opportunity not just for aspiring journalists but for film majors as well.

I’ve been at the paper for almost four years now, and it has provided me with invaluable experience that not only helps me in filmmaking, but also looks pretty damn snazzy on my resume.

At The Towerlight, you don’t have to wait for an assignment in class to be able to cover a story.

You can be given a story, go cover it and see it appear in print or online soon after.

Why waste such an amazing opportunity to gain valuable skills in a profession you want to do for the rest of your life?

Starting next semester especially, I’ll do my best to talk wherever I can about The Towerlight and answer any questions students have.

I wouldn’t still be at the paper after four years if I didn’t think I was getting something important out of it, and I want to make sure everyone has the same opportunity I had.  That’s all for now folks.

I’m sure I’ll be coming to you next year with all sorts of opinion pieces.

Meanwhile, if you happen to see me around, don’t be afraid to say hi or shoot me an email at senior@thetowerlight.com.

Ask me questions about the paper, I’ll be more than happy to answer them.

I think you should focus on actually editing articles before you try to branch out on social media. The spelling, grammar, and paragraph/article structure are generally atrocious. Work on that, please.
