Towson falls to Sacred Heart in season opener

Towson (0-1) fell to the Sacred Heart Pioneers (1-0) in Friday’s season opener in Fairfield, Conn., dropping the game 3-1.

The Pioneers put the pressure on the Tigers’ defense, tallying multiple shots and earning two penalty corners within the first 20 minutes. Sacred Heart outshot Towson 5-2 in the first half and 17-4 in the game.

Towson did not record a shot until the 26th minute, but capitalized on its second shot of the game.In the 28th minute, sophomore Courtney Branco knocked a pass from freshman Heather Jenny into the goal to give the Tigers the lead going into halftime.

The second half was controlled mainly by the Pioneers. Sarah Bergman found Kate Boyd twice to give Sacred Heart the lead in the 52nd minute.

The Towson defense remained on its heels for the rest of the game, conceding a Bergman goal in the 59th minute.

The Tigers will face Quinnipiac Sunday in the second game of their road trip in Hamden, Conn.
