Blackout guide
The wrath of Hurricane Sandy caused a lot of damage, one of the biggest concerns were the power outages. If you’re still stuck without power, here’s The Towerlight’s guide of tips about how to keep yourself busy.
Board games: There’s nothing like a good ol’ Monopoly game. Yes, you probably haven’t played since you were 10 years old, but that will only make it more fun. Grab some friends, light some candles and make yourselves comfortable. It’s bound to be a long game and take up some serious time. Another board game suggestion is Scrabble. Add a bit of competitiveness by making teams. Losers have to cook dinner. Non-perishables, anyone?
Reading: You’ve probably told yourself that if you just had more free time during the semester, you might actually read a book for fun. Well, now’s your chance. During the day, your windows should supply enough light to relax on your couch and read a good book. Once it starts to get dark, light some candles and add some ambience.
GameBoy: Flashback to your ‘90s childhood. Get out your old GameBoy, some games and start playing. Whether it’s Pokemon, Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Mega Man, Metroid, or even Miss PacMan. GameBoy games can keep you entertained for hours.
Dance Party: Use someone’s iPod and have a dance party with your friends. Honestly, when was the last time you did that? Whether it’s old-school Spice Girls, S-Club 7, Sum 41 music or some iTunes Top 100, get your friends together enjoy yourselves. If your iPod is dead, make your own music. Start an acoustic cover band and plan your first YouTube hit. You could be the next Justin Bieber, after all.
Study: It’s been running through the back of your mind since the moment classes were cancelled Monday and Tuesday and you know it. You probably shouldn’t waste two days and not do anything, but your couch was just calling your name. Well, now that you have no power, it’s your chance to catch up. If your laptop is dead, Facebook can’t distract you. Just sit down with your books and finally do that reading that your teacher assigned weeks ago. Or if you are a good student and have already done the readings, check out your syllabus and use this time to get ahead.
Sex: If your significant other is willing to brave the elements, a power outage is an excellent time to make the beast with two backs. Cuddle up under a blanket to protect yourselves from the cold and see what happens from there. The dark can provide an interesting mystique and intimacy to your sexy time. Sex can also occupy a good amount of your time (depending on who you are) and can warm you up in case your heat has turned off. Be safe!
