Nerd’s Corner: Political games

10 October 2012 By Brent Girard, Columnist No Comments

Are you voting for our next president this semester? (I know you are.)

Then you’ll want to make sure you’re ready. And what better way to get ready for anything than to …*drum roll*… play a video game!

Gamesforchange.org provides a number of political pastimes to make sure you’re informed before hitting the voting booth.

The first is Budget Hero, the government tax simulator. It can be hard to pin down exactly how each candidate will lower our national debt. In this game you will choose different policies, slash certain programs, and “address specific tax extender policies that are set to end this December.”

You will deal with the same challenges that our candidates face. When you’re finished, you’ll be given an Obama or Romney badge depending on your choices. This way you can see with whose budget policies you are most closely aligned.

Other badges you can earn include Tea Party, health, wellness and energy independence. Can you solve America’s budget crisis and stick to your ideals?

Everyone likes earning prizes. MTV understands. Ever played Fantasy Football? With MTV Fantasy Election you can pick your political dream team.

Candidates are rated on a specific set of statistics, including transparency, public opinion, and connection to their constituencies. The data used is gathered from a wide variety of news sources to create a “well-rounded, non-partisan perspective on each candidate.”

Players will earn points based on their choices to win real-world prizes, such as TVs, gift cards, a fantasy weekend at the Video Music Awards and $20,000 in cash.

It’s great to be rewarded for all the research you already do to become an informed voter.

A new game called “Fibber” works a bit like strip poker. Whenever you guess correctly that a candidate is lying, they lose an article of clothing. If you guess incorrectly, you start losing your clothes.

The statements the candidates will say are pulled from “various news sources, campaign speeches, and public appearances.” With all the rhetoric flying around the campaign trail, you’ll be surprised by what you think is true.

See if you can find out what the presidential candidates look like naked without losing your own skivvies in the process. It’s a game at which, in many ways, you can’t lose.

Of course after all the hoopla, hubbub, and hullabaloo, you may just need to let off some steam. You can do that with VOTE!!!, brought to you by the creators of the infinitely popular iOS game, Infinite Blade.

It pits our two presidential candidates against each other in mortal-ish combat. You’ll swipe your tablet or smart phone to duck, dodge, and attack the opponent with microphones, rubber chickens, witty quotes, lightsabers and more. You can also dress your fighter in all sorts of quirky costumes, including a superhero outfit and a karate gi.

Who will you choose? Round No. 1 Vote!
