Statement regarding allegations against football coach

23 October 2012 By Mike Waddell, Towson Athletics Director 19 Comments

Earlier this fall, a former Towson University student-athlete brought to the attention of the Assistant AD for Compliance, allegations of miscalculated football practice times and his concern for the welfare of our football student-athletes.

Towson University Athletics takes any allegations regarding the welfare of our student-athletes and NCAA violations very seriously. The Assistant AD for Compliance immediately conducted a full investigation. No improprieties regarding practice times were found and no findings indicated that the physical well-being of football student-athletes was placed in jeopardy.

As a matter of departmental protocol, the language that was reportedly used between the coaches and student-athletes would not be in line with the core values of Towson University and Towson Athletics. This is being addressed with all parties involved, coaches, staff and student-athletes.

I will speak on behalf of all the parents of the Football Players to thank Mr. Waddell for making a statement.

We will be following up with our boys to see if the offensive language, demotivating tactics, and inappropriate “teachable moments” that the staff uses to keep the players focused as a team ceases.

We hope as parents that our sons should never ever feel that they can not speak to a staff member about any concern with fear of punishment.

We expect the coaching staff treat the players as young men and understand that respect must be given to be earned.

We ask that the coaching staff develop new methods to motivate inspire the best from the players and to encourage and not discourage.

We expect our sons to be respectful and to give 100 percent in return.

We as parents and fans look to the coaching staff to use appropriate language, especially during gametime so that we are not subjected to the coaches foul language on the sidelines.

We also, want you to address the student sections use of foul language to help promote an overall enjoyable game experience.

We have to believe it is the goal of Towson Athletics to promote values that put the University in a good light. Winning games is just as important as a good reputation.

“Miscalculating” as it it was an accident and it takes a complex mathematical equation to count the hours hahaha

I do not know who appointed you to speak on behalf of ALL the football parents. You do not speak for us. Maria & Mark Ryan. We are quite capable of speaking for ourselves.

I’m not sure why ANY parent would want to thank someone for posting a statement to cover their butt! Waddell made a statement because he HAD to! It wasn’t out of the goodness of his heart. And if I thought my son was being subjected to what these boys have allegedly been subjected to, I wouldn’t be thanking anyone except for the brave players that came forward with these allegations.

Mr. and Mrs Ryan – Your son is awesome. Great guy, great teammate, great receiver!

    Brave players? Proud Alum
Clearly you have never stepped foot in a locker room in your life.
This is a program just beginning to dig it self out from a ten year hole and now it’s being set back by young men acting like boys. You should have more respect for yourself and for the other players you practice with every day to create a side show like this.
You think Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Les Miles don’t curse in front of their players? You think they don’t have them up and running at 6AM? None of these accusations seem like they would be anything out of the ordinary in a high school locker room let alone that pf a Division 1 football program.

I was a senior during coach Ambrose first year at Towson. I would see him walking through Stephens Hall every morning at 8 AM checking to make sure his players were in class. Talk about dedication!

Shame on these players for creating a story, and shame on the Towerlight for running an article that’s detrimental to the university without any real proof.

    Good Job Jen,

Great jod Jen. The people whom the complaints were about conducted their own investigation. What about an independent investigator?

What a thorough and unbias job. Go Towson!

Iagree with the earlier comment the truth will set you free.

As a concerned parent you can guarantee I will be writing a letter to the University on regards to this unbelievable misconduct involving our very own student athletes…Family?! Are you kidding me? Ambrose you have children correct? Now put yourself in the place of Mr. Walkers parents. I commend that young man for standing Up to you and for his teammates, I’ve heard plenty of stories in regards to the mistreatment the players have received, I am happy someone finally took a stand. As parents i believe we too have a responsibility here. Imagine if this was your child, I know for a fact I would have my childs back no matter what and I would hope others would join in to support my son/daughter. I want you to know Mr. Walker I thank you and Im on your side and parents WE NEED TO DO OUR PART, LETS NOT LET THEM FIGHT THIS ON THEIR OWN! I know someone out there is with me, and if this moves you in anyway as a parent dont hold back act on it because GOD knows I am, and sorry Ambrose but God wins everything in my life. Our turn parents

    To Mr. Waddell:

I’d like to make two comments regarding your (mis)statement:

    1. You state that ‘…no findings indicated that the physical well-being of football student-athletes was placed in jeopardy.’ What don’t you get, sir? Do you still not comprehend that there is more than the PHYSICAL well-being of the student-athletes in jeopardy? Do you not understand that it is the emotional well-being of these student-athletes that is also at risk? Life isn’t just about sports. Towson University isn’t a football camp; it’s a University; a place for learning and growing. Get it?

    2. You also (mis)state that ‘…the language that was reportedly used between the coaches and student-athletes would not be in line with the core values of Towson University and Towson Athletics.’ Once again, nice attempt on your part. However, the foul and disgusting and profane language and the religious slurs were not used BETWEEN the coaches and student-athletes. The language was used BY the coaches TO the student-athletes. Get it?

You have quite a talent for putting a spin on things. Have you considered a new career in politics?

  • Concern Football Parent said:

    Ms. Ryan,
Well what do you have to say? You said you were capable but said nothing? How about this, it’s obvious i said something in my post that you don’t agree with so I have no problem excluding you and your family from everything I posted. It’s really laughable that you made no comment on the topic but chose to attack my post. My post was about how the players are talked to and treated and if you prefer that for your son, it’s your prerogative.

  • Concerned Football Parent said:

    To Former Student:
I never said I was in agreement with what Mr. Waddell said. I said thank you because at first because it took him awhile to make a statement. So I’m glad he said finally said something to give us insite to what he thinks so we can therefore agree or disagree. Do I think he’s covering? In part yes. I’m not happy hearing from my son and other players what really goes on. But I nor none of us know what is said behind closed doors unless it is repeated. Will this change things? We dont’ know. Time will tell. So I it’s not necessary to have a problem with me.

  • current player said:

Ambrose has sent a text saying, “if you knowingly or unknowingly signed Trevor’s petition and you regret it you need to come forward before your name is published. There will be no punishment.” Does that not seem like someone trying to blackmail his players so he can cover his tracks???????

  • TUPay said:

It would be blackmail if he threatened punishment if they didn’t retract their signatures. He’s giving each and every one of them a free out.

Lol I’ve lost all respect for our “football players” in the last few days. No wonder these soft little boys play D-1 AA. They couldn’t handle big time ball.

  • Get informed said:

@TUpay…do you understand what you just said? A ‘free out’? From what? What is it they need to ‘get out of’? The obvious wrath if the signatures were to come out, or else they wouldn’t need an ‘out’ to anything.
This man is a hero isnt he. Ha. But what you don’t seem to understand is that the underlying message is saying for those that do NOT ‘regret’, as I dont believe any of them do or they wouldn’t have signed in the first place, these signatures that remain WILL be punished, thats why he’s being so ‘kind’ in allowing them to ‘remove’ their signatures. In other words, hey Guys, you better remove your name even though this is what you believe in, before I find out and you suffer the consequences. I can’t believe you fell for that text and don’t get what he’s really saying. It’s a threat. Look it up.

American football is for pansies! Wearing body armour and having to rest after 20 seconds of playing is not my idea of a man’s sport. Given them ball and put them in wing-attack and see how long these ladies last!

Until I see actual evidence, not hearsay and bitter claims from a dismissed player, I am #TeamAmbrose. He is a leader and a winner. No one said he is supposed to be Mr. Rogers.

We have a much deeper problem with all things going on in the Towson athletic department. We have fake practice logs, we have the verbal abuse, we have a “situation” with West, we have a title IX problem, we have a major financial problem, and we are cutting sports. The NCAA looks at this as the loss of “Institutional Control”. Institutional control is a major issue for the NCAA. If Towson had a long tenured AD or even one with AD experience at other schools this would not be as big of a deal. Since Towson has a first time AD with only two years under his belt, this throws up some major red flags. The school can’t fire ambrose because the would owe him at least $1 million to buy out his contract. They can fire Waddell, as he has broken his contract by losing control of the department and sinking it into over a million dollars in debt. I think this ends with Mike Waddell being let go, or asked to leave. Lets hope the NCAA does not sanction us, because i believe we are already on probation for the basketball APR problem (Another example of a lack of institutional control).

It is our understanding at the end of EVERY year the student/athlete
is given the CHOICE to renew/reup their scholarship offer. If for ANY reason they do not wish to renew they do not have to sign the paperwork.
