College Park student murder-suicide detailed

A graduate student at University of Maryland, College Park shot both of his roommates, killing one and injuring another, before shooting himself Tuesday.

The shooter was identified as 23-year-old Dayvon Green.The deceased was identified as Stephen Alex Rane, 22, an undergraduate at College Park.Prince George’s County Police said the shooting occurred at a home close to the campus on the 8700 block of 36th Ave. around 1 a.m. Green started several fires in the house to lure his roommates outside.

Once outside the house, Green opened fire, shooting both of his roommates several times.

Rane died shortly after in a hospital from his injuries, while the other victim, an unidentified undergraduate student, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injures. After shooting his roommates, Green shot himself in the backyard.

Police recovered a handgun next to Green’s body, as well as a fully loaded semi-automatic weapon and a machete.Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze upon arrival.

Police and school officials are collecting details on the incident. Green had a history of mental illness, his parents said, but did not seek help of mental health professionals at College Park.
