Business owner Abi Frederick is bringing a new, cosmopolitan and very West Coast concept to the Towson area in the form of a blow dry bar.
“I am from California and I moved here three years ago and I was back there for a weekend with friends and saw one there…I thought it was a brilliant business idea and I came back to Baltimore wanting to go to one and there was nothing here,” Frederick said.
Haute Blow Dry Bar opened in the Dulaney Plaza just nine weeks ago but the community has already taken very well to the introduction of this innovative concept, Frederick said.
“We have gotten a lot of repeat customers, they come in once a week and that’s basically when they do their hair for the week,” Frederick said.
This salon is unique in the way that it offers women the combination of sitting at a bar and chatting with their friends, relaxing with a drink and a head massage and feeling pampered with perfectly styled hair.
“There are so many stylists that specialize just in color or just in cut… they are just styling it to show you the color, show you the cut and get you out of there before three hours,” manager and stylist Lorrie Fava said.
Clients have the opportunity to choose from a range of services including a scalp massage, conditioning treatment or one of their many signature styles like a blowout, straightening, curling, updos and more. Walk-ins are welcomed and encouraged, one of the many things that separate Haute from the average salon.
“I just think our whole vibe is just a lot better, from the design of the bar where you can sit in a line with your friends so your backs aren’t to each other as much and you can kind of talk back and forth and then the TVs that you can watch and the music, I just think the whole environment just lends itself much better to social interactions,” Frederick said.
Haute also offers options for large groups such as birthdays, bachelorette and wedding parties. Clients are able to rent out the salon during the day or in the evening when the shop isn’t officially open.
“People can bring food and drinks, we are pretty flexible in terms of what people want to do they can bring their own movies their own music and then we function as a stylist, bartender, whatever they need,” Frederick said.
Haute will be opening a second location this fall in Harbor East in Baltimore and is also looking at securing a third location in Columbia, Md. As for their Towson location, Frederick explained the possibility of the addition of a happy hour special between 4 and 6 p.m. on Thursdays.
“My goal is helping women feel better about their hair, themselves, just giving them a little relaxing me time in the middle of the day which is something I know a lot of people don’t take the time for,” Frederick said. “Its just a little break for women.”
