PopSyd: Fab collabs

11 September 2013 By Sydney Adamson, Associate Art Director No Comments

Personally, I’m not entirely fond of collaborations, or as you would call it in school: group work. There’s always a chance your partners will be lazy, inattentive and unbearingly controlling.

However, that doesn’t really seem to be reflective in my iTunes library. Over the past month its been overflowing with some all-star music collaborations that I just can’t get enough of.

As a big (read: enormous) fan of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran I am absolutely biased when I say that I love everything about their new single “Everything Has Changed.” In listening to the music and lyrics on the track, which is from Swift’s album “Red,” it’s obvious that the two are completely at ease working as a duet. Individually, both artists have the chance to showcase their vocals, which adds unique layers to an already impressive song.

Over years of touring together, All Time Low has become close friends with fellow underground band Pierce the Veil. It was really just a matter of time before the two bands made music together. Last week, ATL announced via Twitter that vocalist Vic Fuentes of PTV would provide guest vocals for “A Love Like War.” Both Alex Gaskarth, ATL’s vocalist, and Fuentes have memorable voices with similar qualities, but surprisingly they do not clash. “A Love Like War” is different from ATL’s previous work, but there’s still a hint of their signature style that will make any fan feel right at home.

Hayley Williams, front woman of pop-rock/alternative band Paramore, stepped in to provide vocals for Zedd’s track “Stay the Night.” Williams is no stranger to mainstream collaborations or mainstream success; in 2010 she teamed with B.o.B to create “Airplanes.” The song became one of the hottest songs of the year and broke the top ten in a whopping nineteen countries. “Stay the Night” is completely danceable and presents William’s vocals on a silver platter. Like her former collaboration, there’s no doubt this endeavor with Zedd will be equally successful.

Before you break out your credit card or that iTunes gift card your Aunt Marie gave you for your birthday to purchase those singles, you might want to wait and save your money on these exciting future collaborations.

Miley Cyrus, who recently debuted her controversial but record-breaking video for “Wrecking Ball,” is soon to release her new album “Bangerz.” The interestingly titled album is brimming with exciting collaborations like Ludacris, Big Sean and even pop princess Britney Spears.

And if that wasn’t enough to make your account balance weep, Pharrell Williams, of “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky” success, confirmed to the Sunday Mirror that he is in talks to collaborate with British-Irish boy band One Direction on their third studio album, “Midnight Memories.”

Although I love Cyrus, out of all the upcoming collaborations Pharrell and One Direction is definitely at the top of my “Must Listen” list.
