Debate team allowed to attend Harvard Tournament
The Towson University debate team will be authorized to attend the Harvard debate tournament this week, according to a statement released by the University from Provost Timothy Chandler.
Previously, the students were told they were not allowed to attend the conference because it was not originally on their schedule, according to a statement from the University that was posted Thursday evening.
After hearing the news that the team could not attend the Harvard tournament, the debaters created a GoFundMe campaign to raise $3,200 to attend the trip. However, it is still unclear as to whether the students were allowed to raise that money on their own.
In Friday’s statement, Chandler states that, “Based on recently raised concerns regarding the Towson University forensics program, we have determined that more time is necessary to gain clarity on these complex matters. In the interim, in an effort to ensure that we have not disadvantaged either the program or the students, we are allowing the Towson University Speech and Debate team to participate in the Harvard tournament.”
