PopSyd: ‘Hunger Games’ couture
With a revolution and the hearts of two boys hanging over her head, Katniss Everdeen is not the envy of every girl and boy in Panem.
But during ceremonies and interviews in the luxurious Capitol, the Hunger Games victor does sport some rather fiery make-up looks, which definitely sparks some beauty-envy.
This envy, I’m sure, is part of what lead to the creation of the Capitol Collection from drug store make up brand CoverGirl.
The collection gives “The Hunger Games” fans the opportunity to emulate looks worn by the Girl on Fire, and even more. CoverGirl Capitol makeup artist, Dotti, created a beauty concept for each district using unique products from the collection.
While Dotti’s creations are unconventional and outrageously detailed, each look completely captures the trade of its particular district.
District 1, known for luxury, was created using deep red, luxurious lip color and a very fair palette for the skin.
The District 4 look, the fishing district, featured iridescent ocean blues and sea greens, with shimmering blue lip color.
District 5 is known for its power, and the beauty look completely encompasses the trade. Dotti uses bold streaks of red, teal and lime around the eye to emulate sparks of power with strong winged eyeliner to further accentuate the eyes.
The lumber district, District 7, employs elegant nature tones to create an earthy look. Dotti uses blue, green and metallic gold on the eyes and balances it out with black shadow and eyeliner. Because these colors are so eye catching, lip color is almost nonexistent.
The district known for textiles, District 8, is created using tons of red, glossy lip colors. The make-up artist layers red, pink and gold cream eye shadows to mimic the layered colors and textures of textiles themselves.
Katniss’ district, District 12, is known for mining. Mining is a dangerous and unavoidable job in 12 and Dotti’s creation translates that perfectly into a make-up look. She uses silver, grey and black to create a serious, smoked eye and then adds a touch of bright canary yellow in the corner.
The look for 12 also features Katniss’ trademark messy braid.
As a constantly growing franchise, “The Hunger Games” has created yet another clever way to capitalize on the name but this time in a unique way.
In other news, the film’s final trailer was released on Oct. 27 during the fourth game of the World Series. Previously, a few small trailers for the film had been released, but nothing so encompassing and exciting as the final one.
If you’re confused by all this “Hunger Games” talk, you still have 22 days to get yourself out from under the rock you’ve been living under and read the books.
