Q&A with Women’s Basketball Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler
Staff Writer Tyler Beard had the opportunity to catch up with the new women’s basketball coach, Niki Reid Geckeler.
The Towerlight: What was it like to become the head coach of Towson?
Niki Reid Geckeler: It was a very exciting process. It’s a great time for Towson. The football program is doing very well, as well as the men’s basketball team. Towson athletics is heading in an exciting direction and I think that’s the women’s basketball team is heading in that direction too.
TL: How does your collegiate career at Georgetown as a point guard help transition into being a coach?
NG: The point guard is the most important role on the team. It’s basically the quarterback of the game, so it helps transition you into the coach because it’s a lead role. After playing point guard, it was an easy transition into becoming a head coach.
TL: What are your expectations for the team this season?
NG: Well our main goal is to just be successful. We want to take this thing day by day. If you can be successful day to day, then the good results will show.
TL: Are there any key games you’re looking forward to?
NG: The first game at home against Navy is going to be a big one for us. Also, anytime you have a team like the University of Maryland play against you is big. But the game against Navy is huge because it’s the first game in the new arena. All the games should be exciting for us because they’re all equal.
