3 die in Columbia Mall shooting

26 January 2014 By Jonathan Munshaw, Editor-in-Chief One Comment

Three people are dead after a shooting at The Mall in Columbia, which is just over 30 minutes from campus.
Late Saturday afternoon, Howard County Police said that the two victims of the shooting inside a Zumiez skate shop were Brianna Benlolo, a 21-year-old from College Park, and Tyler Johnson, 25, of Mount Airy.
The other victim in the shooting was the shooter, who appeared to have taken his own life after killing the others.
According to police, there is currently no known motive in the shooting, although CNN was reporting earlier in the day that the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute.
However, the shooter was armed with a shotgun, a large amount of ammunition and a bag in which police found two devices that appeared to be crude explosive devices.
The shooting occurred on the second floor in the mall, a shopping center that holds over 200 shops.
Five other people were treated for injuries at Howard County General Hospital, but were eventually released. One woman was injured after being shot in the foot, while the others sustained injuries while trying to escape the mall.
The mall was on lockdown for several hours, with shoppers hiding in the back of many stores. It was still closed on Sunday, and there was no word as of Sunday morning if it was going to remain closed on Monday.
Antone Bishop, a shopper at the mall, told The Baltimore Sun that it sounded like there was a stampede after hearing shots.
“There were people running everywhere,” Bishop said to The Sun. “People were running out of the store … people didn’t know what to do. People were crying. Everyone was just in a panic.”
Saturday was the fifth day in a week where there was either a shooting or a threat of a shooting in the U.S.
Shootings also occurred at South Carolina State University on Friday, Purdue University in Indiana on Tuesday and at Widener University on Monday.

It sucks that you can’t go to the mall or the movies(2012 shooting in the movies) without the crazies trying to kill off people. Domestic disputes has nothing to do with the other people just mining their business and shopping like normal people. Its so sad but necessary to implement the airport security in public locations as well… Hopefully this will protect everyone from the crazies.
