PopSyd: Oscar fashion highlights

5 March 2014 By Sydney Adamson, Associate Art Director No Comments

The 2014 Oscars were a grand affair, but unfortunately the fashion did not quite compare to the magnificence of the prestigious event.

I was mostly underwhelmed by the fashion, but there were a few select gowns that actually struck a chord with me.

One trend that stood out was the abundance of pale pink and nude colored gowns on the carpet.

Actress Sarah Paulson was no exception to this trend.

Known most recently for her work in “American Horror Story” and the Academy Award winning film “12 Years a Slave,” Paulson wore one of my favorite designers, Elie Saab, to the award ceremony.

Her gown was peach colored with three-quarter length sleeves and a skinny belt around her waist.

From head to toe, her dress was embellished with an incredible amount of sequins and beading. This intricate beading is a signature of Elie Saab.

Paulson finished her look with muted accessories, like a small clutch and neutral earrings that let her dress stand out.

Then, both Emma Watson and Idina Menzel walked the red carpet wearing two very different Vera Wang gowns.

Watson went for a sleeveless metallic silver and black dress that showed off her arms and her curves.

With it, she paired metallic accessories like a geometric clutch and a variety of interesting rings.

Unlike Paulson, Watson wore a bold red lip that really brightened up the rest of her look. And compared to the rest of the gowns, Watson’s gown actually looked like it was comfortable.

Idina Menzel, singer of the Academy Award winning song “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” wore a strapless deep emerald green gown.

The gown featured a sweetheart neckline and a fitted bodice, which allowed the singer to show off her curves just as Watson’s gown did.

Menzel and her stylists made the right choice by sticking to neutral make-up and straight hair for the rest of her look, as it allowed the unique color of her gown and all of her jewels really pop.

Of course, this fashion review wouldn’t be complete if there was no mention of Lupita Nyong’o.

At all of the events during the 2014 award season, Nyong’o has wowed fashion commentators with her unique choices.

The Best Supporting Actress winner wore a light blue gown with a plunging neckline that was almost reminiscent of Cinderella.

The gown was embellished with strips of sequins and she accessorized with a gold snake bangle, a few gold rings and gold earrings. She also wore a thin gold headband, which is about as close she could get to wearing a princess tiara without actually wearing one.

Overall Paulson, Watson, Menzel and Nyong’o stood apart from an otherwise lackluster red carpet showing.
