Diligently Delivering “Dexter”

Every few years, a show will have a season that, no matter which way the plot turns, it just can’t seem to go wrong.  So far this fall, “Dexter” is having one of those seasons.
Thus far the fourth season of Showtime’s biggest show has been one that will always be remembered when “Dexter” is reflected on thirty years from now. Michael C. Hall has been brilliant this year as everyone’s favorite serial killer, and now new-dad.
If you’ve been watching, then you know that since the premiere there has not been a lot of emphasis on Dexter’s son Harrison, which is surprising given how this season was promoted. The two main plots have been trouble with his marriage, and the tracking of the newest serial killer: ‘The Trinity Killer’, aka Arthur Mitchell, played by John Lithgow.
John Lithgow shines Dexter’s new adversary. With each episode, Lithgow’s performance becomes more and more commendable. Trinity is probably the creepiest killer yet, and possibly the most complex (and yes, I am including Mr. Morgan in that statement).
But Lithgow isn’t the only one thats standing out this season, Jennifer Carpenter is showing some real talent this season that, in my opinion, has been under wraps until this point in the series. Her monologue to Dexter following the death of her (and our) beloved Frank Lundy was gripping, and hit pretty hard. But speaking of Lundy, it’s time to dive into the theories for the rest of season four.
The big question, and ultimately the big twist is: Who shot Lundy and Deb? And I believe I have the answer. The obvious answer is that it was Trinity, it’s also the wrong answer. Dexter thinks that it’s Trinity, but he doesn’t know what we know. After lengthy conversations with my Dexter-associates, all of us have come to the only logical consensus: Anton did it.
Think about it!  He clearly sensed things were heating up between Deb and Frank, he also knew details about the Vacation Murders from Deb. So setting it up to look like the Vacation Murderers did it would not have been that hard. Also, with it being publicized that Lundy was chasing another serial killer, that could only have helped pile up suspects other than himself. He thought that Deb would come back to him and that he would still be able to help her through her recovery. Now that he knows he was wrong…will he retaliate?
The other theory I have been pondering surrounds a question: when will Rita learn that Dexter is who he is? Since Dexter knows Trinity has been killing for over thirty years, and has also had a family for about that same amount of time, he has logically been wondering how he does it. Again, I think that the answer here is clear: Trinity’s family already knows. It’s the most logical explanation. Therefore, I think it’s also logical to assume that Dexter will think it’ll be okay to tell Rita.
Now I’ll admit, I’m not 100% behind my own theory. If Dexter reveals who he, or if Rita finds out in any way…I think that it would have to happen in the finale. But it is only the fourth season, and with “Dexter”’s popularity it is sure to continue cruising for a few more years (we can only hope for another decade). So this big reveal could be detrimental to the continuation of the series.
Either way, I think some big changes are ahead for The Dark Defender’s life. I don’t know whether or not ‘the big reveal’ will happen in the finale, but something big will end this already miraculous season.
