Je Suis La Mode, a fashion team sponsored by the Black Student Union, held their fall 2009 fashion show tryouts last night in the Susquehanna of the University Union.
About 25 Towson tigers lined up outside the Susquehanna to face a panel of eight judges. Candidates needed to impress the judges with a fierce walk down the run way. All the women needed to have heels on and all the men…let’s just say they needed to turn their “swag” on. Although the technique varies between men and women each candidate gave it their all.
I was given the opportunity to watch the tryouts and notice that each person who walked has their own style. Some were dancers who grace the runway with a sassy display of their multi-talents. Some were aspiring models who walked with major confidence; sometimes too much confidence. Some were transfer students who had never modeled before.
Jacqueline Liggins, a transfer student from Tuskegee University, tried something new for a change.
“I auditioned because I wanted to meet more people. As a transfer student you don’t get to meet people unless you join groups or become active” Liggins said.
Although Jacqueline Liggins hasn’t done modeling before she did not seem to be a stranger to the runway. Judging by the photo I captured of her, Liggins brought her alter ego “Jackie Fierce” and gave the judges the business, as I like to call it.
Je Suis La Mode is under the direction of four executive board members. Myka Middleton, Janine Proctor, Amber Merrick, and Jene’e Randolph will be the women in charge of this year’s fashion show.
According to board member Jene’e Randolph, the fashion show will be toward the end of the spring semester. Spectators can expect to see performances from BSU Soul, the dance team, and BSU Rhythm, the step team. This year’s fashion show will also feature pieces created by various designers from the surrounding areas. The board hopes to work out a deal with the fashion designers of Maryland Institute College of Art.
I am looking forward to seeing what these talented young men and women have in store for Towson. This show should be a good collaboration of different art forms. With students of all different backgrounds participating, I am sure it will be a success.
The last day for tryouts for Je Suis La Mode (I am fashion) is Thursday September 24, 2009 in the Susquehanna at 8:00pm. I encourage all students to try out and show a little or your own tiger style.
