Nice things, we can't haz them

5/31/09 10:58 PM

Working on the column for the summer issue. I have my own ideas to give me 600 words, but for you guys, here's a question: What technology do you/did you frequent that got ruined when it got popular? And who do you hold responsible? Oprah? Ashton Kutcher? The FSM?

The Son of Spore

5/19/09 8:25 PM

Regular readers may remember the hate I dumped on Spore. If this video (via Kotaku) holds true, I'm ready to tone it down. The crew behind Robot Chicken is kicking in designs for the expansion. Do want.

Here's the photographic evidence.

Summer games

5/13/09 9:03 AM

So what games is everybody looking at spending their summer with? I haven't had time to browse Kotaku to go looking myself. Similarly, my column has skewed away from games lately, since I've been swamped with work.

So yeah, feel free to recommend stuff.

Forever no more

5/10/09 2:38 PM

Word came via Digg that 3D Realms, of "Duke Nukem" fame, is no more. So "Duke Nukem Forever" is still a fitting title for the vaporware legend. But still, this kinda sucks. It's never good to see a legendary company go. Besides "DNF" (which also stands for "Did Not Finish," as it happens), the developer also had a hand in popular titles like "Max Payne" and "Prey," a personal favorite.

I hate writing obituaries.

Power to the Podcasters

5/6/09 11:22 PM

So between long nights at the paper, long nights working on papers and long nights spent procrastinating on YouTube and TVTropes when I should be working on papers, I do a podcast called Rangercast. Tons of fun, check it out sometime. Anywho, I got invited to Balticon as a guest on their new media track. When not arguing with people dressed as Klingons about the merits of the new "Star Trek" film, I'll be doing three panels, so check that out. I've been trying to come up with tips to give to newbies. So tell me, dear reader (or readers... aw, who am I kidding? Thanks for reading, though, Mom), what do you look for in a podcast? What podcasts do you listen to/watch? What is there that amateur podcasters do that just pisses you off?...

Welcome one and all

5/6/09 1:14 PM

Thanks to the good graces of Online Editor Blake "Blake Blake Leopard" Savadow, I now have a blog. What kind of stuff will I write here, you ask? Whatever I want. Strange Japanese gadgets, stranger Japanese video games, gigantic televisions, microscopic computer chips and YouTube videos, many possibly involving kittens. If it's not big enough to warrant its own column, or it's big enough to stick here and let simmer first, it'll land here. This will also be my playground for the summer months, allowing all you out there to get your recommended daily value of geek. You're welcome. That said, on to crazy YouTube videos. I make no promises of those kittens, however. Not having Segata Sanshiro is why the Sega Saturn failed in the US. Just throwing that out there. A...
