Senior Henry Basta and Junior Jay Karolenko’s musical tribute to Towson University titled, “I Tell ‘em Towson University” premiered at 9:30 a.m. on May 17. Basta said the video couldn’t gone better. “I think I speak for everybody, especially Jay and myself, when I say we were overwhelmed with the amount of positive feedback we received,” Basta said. Four months ago, the duo who are in a band called Sharpened Crayons, were called upon by [...]

If anyone but children in the Towson community wanted to take a dance class taught by the professionals at TU, they were out of luck. But a new modern dance company, Deep Vision Dance, has started collaborating with the dance department’s Community Dance program to provide dance lessons to the greater Towson community. Artistic Director of Deep Vision Dance and part-time faculty member Nicole Martinell said that with the transition, the community can expect more [...]

Towson Free Clothing Exchange allows students to swap old clothing, make donations

As summertime quickly approaches, some students are finding themselves switching their North Face jackets for swimsuits and their Ugg boots for flip-flops. For junior Cody Kepner, the change of seasons was the perfect opportunity to host Towson’s first free clothing exchange. Inspired after watching a documentary on a group of college students who collected a myriad of items in their apartment and gave everything away, Kepner said he wanted to create a similar scenario at [...]

CAB celebrates 10 years of programs

As the Campus Activities Board celebrates its 10th anniversary this week, it is celebrating the traditions it has brought with it to Towson University, like open mic nights, Battle of the Bands and Tigerfest. “When I first came to Towson, we didn’t have the Campus Activity Board,” Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, Teri Hall said. “It was student government that was doing most of the programming at the time.” Hall worked with colleagues to [...]

University personnel decisions questioned

Speculation about personnel changes within the facilities management department continues following several anonymous letters sent to The Towerlight. Four letters claim that associate vice president for facilities management Roger Hayden improperly hired former Comcast Communications senior vice president Curtis Pendleton as the director of operations and maintenance, replacing longtime director Harry Hughes, and placing Hughes at a more distant position within the department. Hughes is currently listed as a director of the physical plant for [...]

CAB opens up the mic

There aren’t many events at Towson University where people can see yo-yoers, comedians, singers and dancers all in one show, Campus Activities Board programming chair Nick Jones said. During CAB’s Last Open Mic Night: “Pre-Tigerfest,” students with a wide variety of talents were encouraged to partake, whether they were experienced performers or first-timers. “I like these kinds of events because they’re not so specific. Like ‘Battle of the Bands,’ where it’s just bands,” Jones said. [...]

As a transfer student, I tend to compare everything to my previous university. I have compared the people, the teachers and the classes. Those seem to be about the same, but the one thing that is sticking in my mind about Towson is that I feel like I am being swallowed by this University. Ever since I began here, all I have heard about is how much better things will be when we spend all [...]

Mankind Part II: We’re not that great

As I said last week, part of me is fascinated by how amazing human beings are, but only part of me. This is because another part of me is also fascinated by how hypocritical, irrational and just flat-out horrible we can be, despite our unprecedented cognitive abilities. We do so many things that just don’t make sense to me. Our bodies, these incredible vessels that allow us to exist, are so important to us, yet [...]

Apathy proves to be present throughout campus

Towson University is home to more than 250 student organizations that host a number of events each month for the 20,000-plus students on campus to enjoy. But many say that a majority of students commute to campus only for classes. Many who live on campus don’t stay in their residence halls during weekends. Events have growing attendance, according to University officials, but many of the students who attend are part of a collective that is [...]
