Tigers pouncing on chance to play in postseason
2 Mar 2014 | No Comments | By Jesse Jones, Sports Editor
Riding a six-game winning streak, Towson and Head Coach Pat Skerry hold the No. 2 seed heading into the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The Tigers won a program record 22 games this season, a year after setting the NCAA record for biggest season turnaround. “We’ve had a very good regular season,” Skerry said. “Now, it’s for all the marbles. We know what our goal is. It won’t be easy but we’re playing as well as we have all year.” Towson was banned from postseason play last year because of low APR scores from the 2010 season, when Skerry was not even running the program. Up first for […] Read the full story »

Senior guard Tanisha McTiller helped lead the Tigers to a 75-63 win over the College of Charleston Cougars on Senior Day at SECU Arena Sunday. “It was a tremendous way to end the season here at the SECU,” Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler said. “It’s been a year of ups and downs, however, when you win like this you’re very happy.” It was McTiller’s final home game of her Towson career, as she finished the game with 26 points and seven rebounds. “I’m very excited for Tanisha McTiller, as she played a tremendous game,” Geckeler said. “As we all know, she’s left her legacy here. She’s left […] Read the full story »

Tied at 58 with seven seconds remaining in Saturday’s regular season finale against William & Mary, senior forward Marcus Damas dribbled to the top of the key and found classmate Mike Burwell open down low. Damas passed the ball to Burwell, who sank the eventual game-winning floater with 1.5 seconds remaining. The Tribe were never able to get a shot off, and the Tigers held on for their 22nd win of the season, a school record for wins as a Division-I program. The Tigers will have the No. 2 seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament as well. “Unbelievable atmosphere here today. It was jumpin’,” Head Coach […] Read the full story »

For most teams, shooting 1-of-12 from three-point range and just 33.9 percent overall, to go along with just two assists and having three starters foul out on the road is a recipe for disaster. But when the nation’s leader in double-doubles records his 19th of the season with 28 points and 16 rebounds, and the team goes 30-of-31 from the free throw line, certain teams will be able to escape a hostile environment with a win. And that’s exactly what Towson did Wednesday night at James Madison, as the Tigers overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half to take down the Dukes 69-66 at the Convocation […] Read the full story »

TU falls 60-59 to UNCW
23 Feb 2014 | No Comments | By Tyler Beard, Staff Writer
The Tigers blew a late lead in the second half and lost a heartbreaker to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, 60-59 on Sunday at Trask Coliseum. “When we lose that building for just one second we give our opponent that much confidence,” sophomore guard Dominique Johnson said. It was a game which featured a back-and-forth contest between the Tigers (12-15, 6-8 Colonial Athletic Association) and Seahawks (4-24, 3-11 CAA). UNC Wilmington guard Brie Mobley hit two free throws with under 30 seconds left to give the Seahawks a 28-27 lead to go into halftime. Towson came out of halftime with solid energy though and took a 57-50 lead […] Read the full story »

The Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak with a 75-69 win over William & Mary on Thursday night at SECU Arena. “I’m very excited and very pleased with the performance of our young ladies,” Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler said. “It was a team effort and we played hard all the way until the end.” Towson (12-15, 6-8 Colonial Athletic Association) was able to shoot 55.6 percent from the field, which is the highest shooting percentage the team has shot at all season. “I think a lot of people were touching the ball tonight and that’s how you beat a zone defense,” Geckeler said. “Very happy with […] Read the full story »

To the naked eye, Thursday night’s game at Northeastern, Towson looked like the clear favorite. The preseason Colonial Athletic Association favorite was 18-9 overall and 9-3 in conference play. The Huskies were just 9-18 and 6-7 in the CAA. However, the Tigers had never beaten the Huskies in the Pat Skerry era. In fact, the last time that Towson had beaten Northeastern was in the 2009 CAA Championship. The last regular season win against the Huskies came on Jan. 2, 2008. And despite trailing on the road in the second half, Towson grinded its way to a 79-70 road win for its 19th win of the season […] Read the full story »

Before senior Marcus Damas takes the court, inspiration is just a call away. The 6-foot-7 forward calls his mother, Martine, prior to each game. While Damas was in high school, Martine was diagnosed with breast cancer. Six years later, she’s cancer free, alive and well. “Just being a kid, it directly just scared me right away,” Damas said. “My mom, she just was always strong about it and she just really inspired me, like nothing could be that bad. She’s still surviving to this day.” Along with his mother, Damas also has his cousins to look to for motivation. One cousin, Tobias Harris, plays in the NBA […] Read the full story »

Before Monday night’s conference matchup with rival Delaware, Towson had hosted several big games at SECU Arena. The Tigers christened their new home with a win over Navy, defeated an established Temple program and took down Drexel on Autism Awareness Day. But Monday night’s game was the most important thus far, as the Blue Hens entered the game a perfect 11-0 in conference. The Tigers were just three games back in second place with four games still left before the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. The Tigers stepped up to the challenge, avenging an 83-76 loss earlier in the season by playing one of their best games of […] Read the full story »
