Towson Rugby will play its first conference game of the season Saturday at home against UMBC with high expectations on the line. The Tigers are coming into the match ranked No. 5 in all of Division II rugby and is in search of making it back to the national semifinals for the third straight season. “I think the team as a whole is just really excited to start our conference play. Right now really starts our road to hopefully winning a national championship this year,” senior Jason Laraia said at Thursday’s practice. The team has already played two matches this season, winning its first against Villanova by […] Read the full story »

Dance team comes from behind to win National title
19 Apr 2014 | No Comments | By Matt Hamilton, Associate Sports Editor
Towson’s dance team found itself in an unfamiliar spot after the first day of competition in the National Dance Alliance Collegiate National Championship on April 10 in Daytona Beach, Fla.: second place. Winning 15 consecutive championships up to that point, Towson’s second place preliminary round finish, its first since 2004, was not expected. “We were a little bit confused because … our coaches kept saying this is the best routine we’ve ever done, this is the most prepared we’ve been,” senior Rachel Petti said. “But we weren’t discouraged at all. We were very confident because we felt that our routine was strong enough.” The preliminary scores (out of […] Read the full story »

TU finishes first season with championship

Just four months ago, Towson women’s ice hockey had never played a game together. It took months of planning and gathering players to get to that point, so being able to step on the ice for the first time was the goal. After three straight losses to begin the team’s first season, expectations were on improving as a team, not necessarily winning. “We knew it was going to be a challenge because we were a new team and some of the teams we were playing have been around since the inception of the league 12 years ago,” sophomore captain Beth Kennedy said. “We had to quickly learn […] Read the full story »

30 Oct 2013 | No Comments | By Jesse Jones, Sports Editor
When sophomore Beth Kennedy and her eight teammates took the ice Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Brigade Sports Complex at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., months of hard work had finally paid off. What started as an idea had become a reality, and the first ever Women’s Club Ice Hockey Team at Towson was about to play its first game in school history against Navy’s women’s club team. “We went to the rink and everyone was fine warming up, but I think the last 10 minutes before we got on the ice, everyone was just like, ‘Oh wow,’” Kennedy said. “It hits you that […] Read the full story »

Joe DiPaula sat in his Residence Tower common room, accompanied by three of his quadmates. DiPaula was a freshman just getting used to Towson and hadn’t branched out on campus as much as he had wanted. There simply wasn’t much to do for DiPaula at Towson, so he spent much of his time talking with friends. However, what happened in that common room changed DiPaula’s college experience, and life, forever, he said. A floor mate from a different quad walked into the room, equipped with cleats and a Frisbee. DiPaula, who played football and basketball at Calvert Hall College, was intrigued. DiPaula and his friends approached their […] Read the full story »

For the second straight year, Towson will face Salisbury in the Collegiate Rugby Semifinals

For sophomore Jason Laraia, Towson’s club rugby team is more than a sport. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s not just the team aspect, it’s also the social aspect that we hang out, we’re good friends, family,” Laraia, the team’s vice president, said. This aspect of the rugby team, which has been established at Towson since 1975, is facilitated by not only the players, but also by the coaches, four adults from the community, three of which are Towson alumni. “If you think about what a fraternity or sorority means to some people, well we have that same aspect, we are a family… but we wrap […] Read the full story »

Women’s club team prepares for tournament
14 Nov 2012 | No Comments | By Jesse Jones, Assistant Sports Editor
After missing the deadline to participate in the 2011 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s National Campus Championship Series National Soccer Championships, the women’s club soccer team applied just minutes after registration opened for this year’s competition Sept. 25. The team was wait-listed, but after a week of wondering if they had made the final cut, the Tigers received the news they had been anticipating. The Tigers were officially accepted Oct. 3 to participate in the 2012 NIRSA NCCS National Soccer Championships held in Memphis, Tenn. for the first time since 2009. “Last year when we told the team we didn’t get in, it was one of the most […] Read the full story »
