Football Eight months have passed since Towson fell to the North Dakota State Bison in the Football Championship Subdivision Championship Game in Frisco, Texas. Still, the energy from the championship game run resonates throughout the program and community. “It’s exciting that people are finally understanding that you get up every morning and you’re going to win a National Championship,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said.  “All of a sudden they say ‘You know what? I don’t care what anyone says, I can be the best at what I’m doing.’ And I love hearing that. That now happens because of what our guys have done. If that’s not […] Read the full story »

Blue Devils' last-minute drive tops Towson
31 Aug 2014 | No Comments | By Matt Hamilton, Sports Editor
It was a familiar scene: Fans, all dressed in yellow, crowded the stands for Towson football. However, it wasn’t the Football Championship Subdivision championship game and the opponent wasn’t the North Dakota State Bison. This time it was the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, a team that finished 4-8 last season. But the game ended the same way, a crushing loss for the Tigers on Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium. “Give credit to Central Connecticut,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “They came to play and knock off the supposed big boy and did just that. … I’ve said time and time again to these guys that […] Read the full story »

It’s the same Terrance West we all know from three years of Towson games, but he’s traded in the black and yellow of Towson for the brown and orange of the Cleveland Browns. The competition has also gotten much tougher, as he’s lining up against veteran NFL linemen in lieu of college ones. “I love the fans. I love big stages. I love the lights and I love big atmospheres,” he told the Browns’ website. A lot has happened to West since May 9. An entire summer has changed West’s career path, joining the Browns for rookie minicamp, team minicamp, training camp and now preseason games. It’s […] Read the full story »

Senior wide receiver looks for comeback from 2013 ankle injury
21 Aug 2014 | No Comments | By Matt Hamilton, Sports Editor
Spencer Wilkins still has the towel that he hung over his head in disappointment in Richmond on Oct. 26 of last year. It was a 48-32 win, but the game meant much more for the Towson senior wide receiver. “I remember it vividly, just like it was last week,” he said at the team’s media day on Wednesday. “I keep [the towel] around with me as just a reminder that this game could be taken from you any minute.” Wilkins knows this reality all too well, as he suffered a broken ankle in the game against Richmond. The injury ended his season and kept him out of […] Read the full story »

Former Towson running back Terrance West knew his time would come. After declaring for this weekend’s NFL Draft on Jan. 7, West set his sights on making an NFL team. Over four months later, his dream was realized, as West was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 94th pick in the draft Friday night. The Browns traded up, jumping their AFC North rivals, the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers and grabbed West as the sixth running back taken. “[The Browns trading up] means a lot to me,” West told Cleveland local media in a conference call. “Now I have to do my part and perform and […] Read the full story »

Before I get started, I just want to make one thing clear: No one does mock drafts for accuracy. Mock drafts are meant to highlight team needs and the value of each player available in this draft. Even some of the best experts on the draft are lucky to get half the picks right, if not less, in the first round. But I’m already tight on space, so here’s my official Towerlight mock draft with exactly one week left before the first name is called. 1.     Houston Texans – Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina Quarterbacks are just too risky to go No. 1 overall right now, especially […] Read the full story »

Players compete in annual spring game for starting roles
27 Apr 2014 | No Comments | By Matt Hamilton, Associate Sports Editor
While students were getting ready for Tigerfest, Towson was showcasing next year’s talent at Saturday’s Tiger Bowl IV. Although it wasn’t a real game, or a real scrimmage at that, it provided a good glimpse of what fans might see on Aug. 30 when Towson begins its 2014 season against Central Connecticut State. The final score was 28-22, but it didn’t really matter. The Tigers lost many players from last year’s NCAA FCS Championship finalist team, and injuries plagued many potential starters in the spring. With so many holes to fill, there were plenty of questions to be answered in Tiger Bowl IV. Let’s look at those […] Read the full story »

Terrance West puts on a show for 27 NFL scouts on Pro Day
9 Apr 2014 | No Comments | By Matt Hamilton, Associate Sports Editor
Terrance West sported neon green on every article of clothing he wore Monday at Towson’s Pro Day. Neon shirt, neon shorts, neon superman socks, neon Superman shoes with flakes of blue and orange and even neon compression shorts. It’s safe to say West stood out at the rain-soaked Pro Day, where 27 NFL scouts from 22 teams came out to watch him and other former Tigers at Johnny Unitas Stadium. His wardrobe made sure all eyes would be on him, if they weren’t already. And that’s exactly what the past three months have been about for the leading rushing in Towson history: Getting attention. Since he declared […] Read the full story »
