It was a familiar spot: Johnny Unitas Stadium with 9,000-plus fans cheering for Towson. However, this game had a sense of urgency brought about by a 1-2 start, including a loss to Central Connecticut State at home Aug. 30. The Tigers (2-2) got the win they needed over the Eagles (1-3) with help from sophomore running back Darius Victor and his 194 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. They could ill afford a 1-3 start and the 31-20 win made sure it didn’t happen. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said the team wanted to win this game to erase the memories of the home loss to Central […] Read the full story »

Last week, Towson needed a win. Up against a rainstorm and a Delaware State team that it dominated last season, Towson came out with the 21-7 victory in Dover, Delaware. The win helped ease the panic among fans and supports of Tiger football, but another test awaits them as the North Carolina Central Eagles come to Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday night. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said at practice Tuesday that his team is growing in confidence after the win last week. “The attitude and effort of which it takes to win a ball game, instead of having to be pulled out of them, they brought to […] Read the full story »

Down 7-3 at halftime in at a rain-soaked Alumni Stadium in Dover, Delaware, Towson was heading toward a loss to the Delaware State Hornets, what would have been its third consecutive defeat to begin the 2014 season. It certainly wasn’t the outcome Towson had in mind after blowing out Delaware State, 49-7, last season. Head Coach Rob Ambrose spoke words of encouragement at halftime, despite the deficit. “I told them that there was no question in anybody’s mind that we could win the game,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “We just had to go out, do our job, do it together and get excited about doing it. Towson left West Virginia on Saturday with 54-0 loss fresh in its mind and an 0-2 record. It certainly wasn’t a position the team and its fans thought it would be in at this point in the season. The 0-2 start is the first for the Tigers since 1991, a span that features eight losing seasons, including a 1-10 season in 2010. It’s unfamiliar territory for the FCS runner ups from just a season ago. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said he learned a lot about his young team despite the poor start. “I’ve got too many guys that feel sorry for themselves and don’t want to work […] Read the full story »

And I thought Towson tailgates were wild. My trip to West Virginia to cover the Towson football game was certainly eventful, and it all started at a frat party with a few new friends.  It was five hours before the game and, by my estimation, 30,000 or so fans had already lined the parking lot adjacent to Milan Puskar Stadium, tailgating for the first home game of the year. To put that in perspective, that’s almost four times as many fans that showed up at Johnny Unitas Stadium for Towson’s first game all packed into one parking lot, five hours before game time. There were probably Towson […] Read the full story »

It wasn’t the dream scenario that Towson had experienced last season with its win over UConn. In front of 56,414 fans, West Virginia made sure Towson did not complete its second straight upset over a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. The Mountaineers outgained the Tigers 606-122 en route to a 54-0 win, snapping the Tigers’ 10-game road winning streak at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, West Virginia on Saturday night. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said he learned a lot from his team, despite the lopsided loss. “We’ve cleared up some of the fog of the fakers, the guys that talk the talk but don’t walk the walk,” Ambrose […] Read the full story »

Towson made headlines on Aug. 29 of last year, when the Football Championship Subdivision Tigers took down the Football Bowl Subdivision UConn Huskies, 33-18, in front of a national audience on ESPN3. It was a historic win for the program, which went on to make the FCS Championship game, and was their first-ever win over an FBS opponent. Saturday, Towson (0-1) will get a chance to make it two straight wins over an FBS foe when it faces the West Virginia Mountaineers (0-1) in Morgantown, West Virginia. “We’ve had some success,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “We played Maryland tough, obviously we player UConn tough. There are […] Read the full story »

Football Eight months have passed since Towson fell to the North Dakota State Bison in the Football Championship Subdivision Championship Game in Frisco, Texas. Still, the energy from the championship game run resonates throughout the program and community. “It’s exciting that people are finally understanding that you get up every morning and you’re going to win a National Championship,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said.  “All of a sudden they say ‘You know what? I don’t care what anyone says, I can be the best at what I’m doing.’ And I love hearing that. That now happens because of what our guys have done. If that’s not […] Read the full story »

Blue Devils' last-minute drive tops Towson
31 Aug 2014 | No Comments | By Matt Hamilton, Sports Editor
It was a familiar scene: Fans, all dressed in yellow, crowded the stands for Towson football. However, it wasn’t the Football Championship Subdivision championship game and the opponent wasn’t the North Dakota State Bison. This time it was the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, a team that finished 4-8 last season. But the game ended the same way, a crushing loss for the Tigers on Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium. “Give credit to Central Connecticut,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “They came to play and knock off the supposed big boy and did just that. … I’ve said time and time again to these guys that […] Read the full story »

It’s the same Terrance West we all know from three years of Towson games, but he’s traded in the black and yellow of Towson for the brown and orange of the Cleveland Browns. The competition has also gotten much tougher, as he’s lining up against veteran NFL linemen in lieu of college ones. “I love the fans. I love big stages. I love the lights and I love big atmospheres,” he told the Browns’ website. A lot has happened to West since May 9. An entire summer has changed West’s career path, joining the Browns for rookie minicamp, team minicamp, training camp and now preseason games. It’s […] Read the full story »
