Last year, the Delaware Blue Hens notched an improbable, fourth-quarter comeback to shock Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium. This year it was the home team, Delaware, that was favored and it was the away team, Towson, which shocked them late. Senior quarterback Connor Frazier threw for a career-high 181 yards and two touchdowns, including 26 yards on the game-winning, 59-yard drive that sealed the Tigers’ 24-17, comeback win with 53 seconds remaining Saturday in Newark, Delaware. Sophomore Darius Victor’s 17-yard touchdown run capped the drive that spoiled the Blue Hens’ homecoming and added another chapter to the rivalry. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said he and offensive coordinator […] Read the full story »

On Nov. 2 of last year, the Delaware Blue Hens added a new story to the decades-old rivalry. They came into Johnny Unitas Stadium as large underdogs after Towson’s 8-1 start to the season. The Tigers took a 31-10 lead late in the second half, but the Blue Hens completed one of most improbable comebacks this series has seen, scoring three times, including a two-point conversion, to steal the 32-31 victory and hand the Tigers their second loss of the season. This year, the script is flipped, as Towson (2-5, 0-3 Colonial Athletic Association) travels to Delaware (4-2, 2-0 CAA) on Saturday as the underdog coming off […] Read the full story »

Just 50 seconds into the game, James Madison quarterback Vad Lee completed a 48-yard pass for a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead over the Tigers. Lee and the Dukes never looked back after that score, rolling to a 62-7 win over Towson at home. For the Tigers (2-5, 0-3 Colonial Athletic Association), there was turmoil from the start of the game after allowing the early touchdown. Senior quarterback Connor Frazier was replaced by his backup, senior Joe Brennan, which began a series of flip-flipping throughout the game. They threw for a combined 159 yards and completed 23 of 21 passes. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said the […] Read the full story »

At this point last season, Towson was undefeated and held the No. 3 ranking in the Football Championship Subdivision. One year and a slew of starters gone, it’s a different team. The Tigers sit at 2-4 and 0-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association after a 14-3 loss to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday.  The Seawolves (2-4, 1-1 CAA) held the Tigers’ offense to just 77 yards total in the second half. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said the Stony Brook defense line created problems for his young offense and its ability to function smoothly. “They are a very good defensive line,” Ambrose said. “There’s at least one, […] Read the full story »

Last week’s loss to Maine — one that included a game-winning touchdown in the last minute of regulation — was bittersweet for Head Coach Rob Ambrose and Towson. The Tigers outrushed Maine 254-46 and controlled the momentum in the second half, but came up with its first Colonial Athletic Association loss regardless. Despite the rough start, Ambrose said he has faith that his team can be successful this season. “It doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish,” he said. “If we can stay healthy and keep progressing and learn how to finish games, we’re going to be OK, we’re going to make a run. And […] Read the full story »

Going into the 2013 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, before Towson’s historic run, much of the talk was surrounding another Colonial Athletic Association team. The Maine Black Bears won the CAA title last year and went into the postseason seeded fifth, while Towson got a No. 7 seed and was forced to play in the first round. This isn’t the first time the two teams battled for conference supremacy. In 2011, the Tigers won the CAA title despite low expectations going into the season. Who finished one game behind them? The Black Bears. Towson and Maine will face off Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium as two of […] Read the full story »

It was a familiar spot: Johnny Unitas Stadium with 9,000-plus fans cheering for Towson. However, this game had a sense of urgency brought about by a 1-2 start, including a loss to Central Connecticut State at home Aug. 30. The Tigers (2-2) got the win they needed over the Eagles (1-3) with help from sophomore running back Darius Victor and his 194 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. They could ill afford a 1-3 start and the 31-20 win made sure it didn’t happen. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said the team wanted to win this game to erase the memories of the home loss to Central […] Read the full story »

Last week, Towson needed a win. Up against a rainstorm and a Delaware State team that it dominated last season, Towson came out with the 21-7 victory in Dover, Delaware. The win helped ease the panic among fans and supports of Tiger football, but another test awaits them as the North Carolina Central Eagles come to Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday night. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said at practice Tuesday that his team is growing in confidence after the win last week. “The attitude and effort of which it takes to win a ball game, instead of having to be pulled out of them, they brought to […] Read the full story »

Down 7-3 at halftime in at a rain-soaked Alumni Stadium in Dover, Delaware, Towson was heading toward a loss to the Delaware State Hornets, what would have been its third consecutive defeat to begin the 2014 season. It certainly wasn’t the outcome Towson had in mind after blowing out Delaware State, 49-7, last season. Head Coach Rob Ambrose spoke words of encouragement at halftime, despite the deficit. “I told them that there was no question in anybody’s mind that we could win the game,” Head Coach Rob Ambrose said. “We just had to go out, do our job, do it together and get excited about doing it. Towson left West Virginia on Saturday with 54-0 loss fresh in its mind and an 0-2 record. It certainly wasn’t a position the team and its fans thought it would be in at this point in the season. The 0-2 start is the first for the Tigers since 1991, a span that features eight losing seasons, including a 1-10 season in 2010. It’s unfamiliar territory for the FCS runner ups from just a season ago. Head Coach Rob Ambrose said he learned a lot about his young team despite the poor start. “I’ve got too many guys that feel sorry for themselves and don’t want to work […] Read the full story »
