It had been almost two years since Kacy Catanzaro left Towson, yet this was her first time back to the school where she spent four years as a gymnast, over two years since she won the NCAA Southeast Regional Gymnast of the Year and competed in her last meet. Catanzaro stood with her Texas-sized cowboy boots firmly planted in the Towson end zone, waving to the 8,000 fans in attendance at the Tigers’ first home football game on the season Saturday night. Three years was all it took for her to become a worldwide sensation and one of the biggest stars of summer 2014. “It’s pretty crazy […] Read the full story »

By only half of a tenth of a point, the Tigers pulled ahead of the North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday evening at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill earning a seasonal high score of 193.100. “We had no idea we were that close to UNC,” Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk said. “We knew they had a couple of falls on floor but really didn’t know what the scores were all along. Once I found out I didn’t tell the girls, I let it be announced so it was quite a shock to them.” The Tar Heels trailed behind the Tigers finishing the meet with an overall score of […] Read the full story »

With only five gymnasts to compete on vault, bars and beam due to injuries, the Tigers struggled in the tri-meet Saturday night in SECU Arena against William & Mary and the University of New Hampshire, placing third with an overall team score of 190.275. “Having injuries on a team is always a hard thing to deal with, but it’s part of the sport,” junior Nicolette Vignola said. “When someone gets hurt it naturally puts some pressure on the girls who can still compete, but nothing really changes. As a team we remain focused on the things we can control.” The New Hampshire Wildcats won the meet with […] Read the full story »

After coming off a season-high overall score last week, the Tigers struggled Monday night in their second quad meet of the season, finishing with an overall team score of 188.70 at the University of Maryland. “We lost a couple of kids to injuries this week, so we had less people to put up,” Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk said. “I think the team let the pressure of those competing and some mistakes that they made get to them.” Maryland won the meet with a 195.225 team score, while Pittsburgh placed second with a 194.90 and George Washington finished third with a 193.825 score. “We didn’t have the greatest […] Read the full story »

Coming off of a second place finish last week, the Tigers survived their first quad meet of the season, placing fourth with an overall team score of 191.325 at the Reynolds Coliseum Friday night in Raleigh, N.C. “I think a quad meet has a lot more energy to it,” Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk said. “It’s kind of like a three ring circus where there [are] people going all the time. “ Michigan won the meet with a 196.800 team score, while North Carolina State placed second with a 195.650 and North Carolina finished third with a 192.450 score. Towson got off to a rough start on floor […] Read the full story »

Towson dropped its first meet of the competition season to the Pittsburgh Panthers 193.375-190.125 at the Fitzgerald Field House on Friday. “I would have to say I was totally surprised by the performance that they gave,” Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk said. “Overall, I think it was a very good start, especially considering some of the circles we’re going to have this year.” Chliszczyk said the team’s biggest goal is to not have two falls in a row. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they struggled in the first event of the uneven bars. “We had two falls yesterday in our overall score in the bars,” Chliszczyk said. “The fact […] Read the full story »

After placing eighth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) last season and having two gymnasts qualify for the NCAA Regional meet, Towson is already preparing for a more successful season than last. The team welcomes Bridget Steffen, Bayleigh Fobes and Bailey Gallagher, three freshmen that Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk believes will make an immediate impact on the team. “All three have the ability to compete all-around for us during their career here,” Chliszczyk said. Last season, sophomores Katie Sassa and Abby Griswold qualified for the NCAA Regional meet where Sassa gave her best performance of the season, earning a 9.85 score on beam. Griswold competed as […] Read the full story »

Despite promising performances, Towson freshmen Abby Griswold and Katie Sassa saw their season end at the NCAA regional qualifying meet Saturday at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Fl. Griswold and Sassa were selected to compete in the regional qualifying meet after Towson did not qualify as a team. Griswold’s scores in the all-around competition and Sassa’s on the vault were high enough to earn them a trip to Gainesville. No. 1 Florida took home the team competition crown with an overall score of 198.400, followed by Minnesota and Auburn. “I think that the whole experience for them was phenomenal and I couldn’t be happier,” Head Coach Vicki […] Read the full story »
