In a dominating second half performance, No. 5 Syracuse beat No. 16 Towson 10-3 Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Towson was delivered a heartbreaking loss in its home opener as the Loyola Greyhounds won 11-10 on a game-winning goal with just 11 seconds left in play. After coming back from a 9-5 deficit, the Tigers (1-3) were left a player down in the final minute when sophomore defenseman Nadia Podo picked up a yellow card. The Tigers were able to bring home their first win of the season, beating the UMBC Retrievers 11-8 Wednesday night on the road. Towson dropped its second game of the season, falling 13-10 to Georgetown in another close loss. The Tigers (0-2) kept even with the Hoyas (2-0) at the beginning of the game, but the key turning point came when Georgetown scored five unanswered goals, taking a demanding 10-4 lead. Towson started its season off in disappointing fashion, losing to No. 5 North Carolina (1-0) in Chapel Hill 9-6 in a tightly contested game. Graduate attack Jackie LaMonica and sophomore attack Sarah Maloof, who each scored two goals and had one assist, led the Tiger’s (0-1) offense. After coming off the previous season as Colonial Athletic Association Champions, Towson came into this year looking to improve even more. The Tigers were knocked out of last year’s NCAA Tournament in the first round by Pennsylvania State University. Towson will host the 2014 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship, the NCAA announced Thursday. “Hosting the 2014 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship is a privilege and honor that not only enhances the Towson University student-athlete experience but also brings a national audience to our campus for a premier sport in the Baltimore community,” University President Maravene Loeschke said in a press release. The Tigers’ program-record 10-game winning streak came to an end Saturday, as former Towson Head Coach Missy Doherty and her Penn State Nittany Lions edged Towson 15-8 in an NCAA Tournament first round battle at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Towson (16-3, 7-0 CAA) officially punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament Saturday night, edging Northeast Conference champion Monmouth (9-11, 6-3 NEC) 15-5 at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
