Since 2001, the Women’s Basketball team has steadily improved; with a lot of the credit going toward head coach Joe Mathews.
This past Tuesday, he was rewarded for his productive coaching with a contract extension, one that lasts through the 2011-2012 season.
In his eight full seasons as the Tigers head coach, he has seen his teams win 40 percent of their games and rise from the cellar of the Colonial Athletic Association.
When he arrived before the 2001-2002 season, the Tigers were coming off a season in which they went 3-25, so the only way to go was up. The next two seasons only saw Towson win five games total, but success arrived in Mathews’ third season at the helm. The Tigers went 16-14 and won nine games in the conference, the first time they finished with a conference record of .500 or better since 1997-1998, when they played in the America East Conference.
Since then, the Tigers have improved drastically, setting a school record for wins (17) in the ’06-’07 campaign before shattering that record a year later. The 2007-2008 team was far and away the best that Towson has had, shown by their 22-10 record and a fifth place finish in the CAA. They also reached the CAA Tournament Semi-finals for the first time in school history.
