University to face less funding per student following budget cut

Towson University is still adding 400 students next fall -- even though lawmakers cut growth money from the state's budget last month. Enrollment has been increasing for many years, and recently the rate of growth has risen. Last fall, for the first time, the state allotted $4.

More than 11,000 athletes from across Maryland are expected to compete in the 2007 Summer Games of the Special Olympics from June 8-10 on Towson's campus. The Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports.

Suspect sought in Residence Tower arson

Police continue investigation into first-degree arson; fire alarms tested

The Towson University Police Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office are still investigating the May 5 first-degree arson that occurred in an elevator in the Residence Tower. As of Sunday, police had not identified any suspects in the incident. No one was injured during the fire, but several students who live on the third floor of the Residence Tower claimed their fire alarms did not sound the morning the fire occurred.

About 2,500 Towson students set to graduate

University to hold six commencement ceremonies beginning May 23; some graduates seek extra tickets

Each year at graduation, Towson President Robert Caret asks all University alumni in attendance to rise to their feet. After this year's 142nd commencement exercises, roughly 1,800 students will be able to join him in as he stands. This year's ceremonies start May 23 and end May 25.

Finance department creates summer reading program

Students earn extra points for reading books; writing reports

Jazzmen Tynes News Editor Students taking finance classes in the fall will have the opportunity to earn extra credit by reading a finance-related book over the summer. The finance department created a list of more than 30 books for students to choose from.

Students gain, catch up on credits during summer sessions

Prior to taking her first class at Towson as a freshman, Jennifer Posner decided to enroll in Writing for a Liberal Education (ENGL 102) during the summer. Posner, a family studies major, said she takes summer courses because she wants to graduate early.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Towson University Police Department will conduct a "Seat Belt Checkpoint" Monday. The site for the checkpoint is Lot 11, adjacent to the Union Parking Garage. Anyone found in violation will receive a citation. Police officers will also distribute pamphlets about vehicle safety.

Year in Review: News

Though Towson's master plan talks about construction and monumental change, the 2006-2007 year was the first time it could be felt. Multiple fences can now be found around campus, and both pedestrian and vehicular pathways were restricted. Lida Lee Tall came down and the beginnings of the West Village housing complex and the Towsontown Garage expansion can be seen.

Year in Review: Sports

Towson Center renovation plans change The Towson Center renovations, which began as a small-scale, $5 million plan to put new seats in the University's athletic arena, has grown into a $30 million project. Included in the new plans are a larger lobby and ticket office area, a realigned playing arena, renovated locker rooms and athletic medicine facilities, and an improved heating and air-conditioning system.

Year in Review: Arts

Method Man performs About 1,200 people attended the Campus Activities Board-sponsored Method Man concert in the Towson Center in September. In a performance following opening acts by fellow Wu-Tang Clan members Masta Killa and Inspectah Dek, Method Man rapped for about an hour and a half, performing songs ranging from solo work, Wu-Tang material and covers.
