Some advice on how to get along with others in your neighborhood
I'm a Towson alumnus - Class of '89, a Towson resident and community leader in Towson. I read Kiel McLaughlin's article this week on the Towson Turf War, ["A turf war over Towson," March 31]. Things have not changed much since I was a TU student and fraternity president. Here's a few tips for students living off campus in neighborhoods that might help you:
Pressure the University to build Greek housing on campus - it is good for everyone - TU's reputation and status as a "real" university and relations with the community (not having pseudo frat houses in neighborhoods).
Remember while your night is just starting at 11 p.m. many people are ending theirs.
Don't pee on people's lawns, but if you must - don't yell to your buddies while you're doing it. I know it's extremely hard when you're hammered, but the less yelling you do in general between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. the less you get into trouble.
Inviting more than 30 people to your house for a party is probably going to get you a visit from the police at some point.
If you have a party - anticipate problems beforehand and think about picking up the beer cans /cups from the lawn and street before the neighbors wake up. If you had a party at your parent's house who are away, what would you do to make sure the neighbors don't get pissed off and tell your parents about the party?
When stoned - Don't break into buildings, set off alarms and fall asleep naked there - it is usually frowned upon.
Make an effort to introduce yourselves to your neighbors, but not between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.
People tend to notice when your place looks like Sanford and Son live there (a junkyard if you don't know who Fred Sanford was).
A good move is to care about living somewhere - pick up the soggy newspapers off your sidewalk, bring in the trashcans, pick up trash, be courteous to your neighbors. And here's some crazy ones: cut the grass and shovel the snow! (These things go a long way in neighbor relations!!!)
