Seven of Towson's music composition majors will command the stage on Wednesday, April 9, as they present pieces they have worked on over the past several semesters. The joint recital, held once per semester, is an opportunity for the student composers to share their work with their friends and colleagues.

The students presenting include Richard Grayson, Adam White, Kyle Vinton, Rebecca Ichnoski, Aaron J. Myers, Charlie Wieprecht and John Haggerty.

"The [concerts are] great because they're an opportunity to present things we've been working on," Myers said. "Performers get to have concerts of pieces they've practiced, so this is our opportunity as composers to present pieces in an academic environment."

Myers, a junior, is debuting three pieces for solo piano at the concert, entitled "Drift," "Fyodor," and "Paroxysm."

"The idea for 'Paroxysm' originated with really just the first opening phrase, which I wrote a couple of years ago. Last year I wrote the piece for classical guitar, and then I decided to make it a piano piece," Myers said. "Then I added on stuff and changed a few things, and over the winter I pretty much finished it up."

Junior Vinton is also debuting two pieces on Wednesday. "SoloWind," a piece for solo trumpet, and "Tetsuo [but someday we will be,]" an 8-channel fixed media piece, will be performed. Vinton said that the latter piece was created more out of curiosity for the process involved rather than being inspired by a story or an event.

"[It's] made up of a bunch of improvisations on synthesizer, which I then mapped out graphically on paper of what I wanted to hear. Then I went back later and arranged all the sounds according to the graphic drawing," he said.

Senior White will debut not only an original composition, but an original video project as well.

"I've been working on it for the last couple semesters. It's kind of like a music video. I shot and edited all of the footage myself, and then I composed music to go along with the video," White said. "It's pretty much all electronic music. I would describe it as a music video that's sort of a musical and visual collage of sorts."
