On Monday afternoon Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) will visit campus to discuss a recent New York Times article about university efforts to make higher education more affordable. The event is the kick-off to Voter Registration week.

Sarbanes will discuss his letter to the editor responding to the article and legislation he is sponsoring to address the issue. The discussion will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in University Union Chesapeake Room III.

The event is part of the "Times Talk" series sponsored by the division of student affairs, the New York Times, and the American Democracy Project.

The article, "Ivy-League Letdown," was published Jan. 22, and Sarbanes' response was published on February 1. The 3rd district representative, who serves most of the Baltimore area, is sponsoring legislation, called the Education for Public Service Act, to forgive student loan debts of college students who go on to take a public service job for at least 10 years after graduation.

"Through federal action, starting with the Education for Public Service Act, we can ensure that the cost of college will not serve as a barrier to public service, giving college students and recent graduates the chance to make career decisions based on their passions rather than on their pocketbooks," Sarbanes wrote in his letter to The New York Times.

Sarbanes was originally scheduled to come to campus as a normal speaking engagement.

"The topic was chosen first," Darcy Accardi, special assistant to the vice president for student affairs and coordinator of civic engagement initiatives, said. "We lined him up for the time slot. Then he suggested the article."

This is the first time "Times Talk" has brought a speaker from outside the Towson community, Accardi said.

For Voter Registration week, tables with information about the presidential election race and voter registration materials will be placed outside of academic buildings.

"I'm hoping that we continue raising awareness about the election coming up in November," Accardi said. "I know it's far away, but this has been an interesting race and people need to be know what's going on."

Accardi said this is the first time tables will be placed in academic buildings as a way of attracting more students.

"I think it's interesting for all students, but particularly seniors and upperclassmen," she said. "It's interesting for students who want to get into public service as a career from someone who is in public service as a career."
