Coming off a first place finish in the Hornet Invitational at Delaware State University last week, Towson benefited from several key individual efforts at the Penn Invitational Saturday. The Tigers brought home some hardware, capturing three first place finishes on the day.
"We had some tough competition, which definitely helped push everyone to perform their best," senior captain Kay Borleis said.
Junior Alea Murphy took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.47 seconds. This time would place Murphy third in Towson history for the event, for which she also holds the second fastest time at 14.44.
Also in the record books is grad student Britta Nelson, who broke her own first place record on the steeplechase with an 11:00.59 finish. Her time was only good enough for third place at the Penn Invitational.
Towson took two wins in the field events as seniors Laura Passalacqua and Kelly Robinson would finish first in the high jump and javelin throw, respectively. Passalacqua would clear at the 5-foot, 5.75-inch bar, and Robinson took the javelin crown at 146 feet, 2 inches. Both seniors have yet to lose at their events this season.
Towson's distance runners also put their names among the top Towson ranks as sophomore Michelle Donadio finished in fourth place in the 5,000 meter run on Saturday behind a trio of Cornell runners. Donadio's time of 18:08.15 would be the third best in Tiger history. Immediately following Donadio, freshman Katie Ogden took fifth at Franklin Field and her time of 18:09.53 would land her the fifth place spot on Towson's all-time list.
Borleis placed sixth in the 5,000 meter run as well.
"This is the year that Towson will prove to be one of the best teams at the CAA," Borleis said.
The Tigers as a team have placed no lower than fifth in any meet. The Tigers will compete in the CAA Championships later this month.
