Candidates are just acting

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts," according to William Shakespeare. Isn't it funny how these few lines can so clearly define our current political candidates?

This is what the candidates are: actors with ideas, scripts and teleprompters on the American stage. With the world as their backdrop, a key component to this play is the background music. I think the current music on the record player is broken. It keeps saying the words "significant but uneven progress." At least that's what I think after hearing Tuesday's report by General David Petraeus to congress and the nation about the war.

The same thing has been said year after year. If you don't want to reveal the true answers at least come up with a different way of saying it. The record player began and the scripts page was turned over as it seemed that questions were left with an unclear answer.

Many drilled Petraeus, including the three potentials for the presidency. Each candidate did a pretty good job with their questions and really differentiated himself or herself.

Yet it was still like I was just an audience member watching a show. No one was cutting the crap - answers were scripted and repetitive.

Taking a look ahead at the Olympics, it seems that the event has more than just a theme of competition in common with the candidates.

This year they are stepping in and getting involved. Just Monday, Senator Hillary Clinton called President Bush and urged him to boycott the opening ceremony of this summer Olympics in China. This would be a step towards showing that the United States does not approve of the recent violence in Tibet and the Chinese government's reactions to the violence in Darfur.

Do we really need to be making more enemies? Do you think China is really going to care if we're at the opening ceremonies anyways or at least care enough to change their ways? I highly doubt it. Our athletes will still be competing.
