Softball: Towson sweeps Delaware

With the regular season coming to an end and the Colonial Athletic Association tournament less than a month away, Towson (25-18, 8-3) picked up a crucial three-game sweep this weekend over Delaware (18-17, 3-9).
Sophomore pitcher Shannon Johnston led the Tigers, earning all three wins in this weekend's series and improving her season record to 13-8. Johnston allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 13 innings of work this weekend.
In a hard fought defensive battle, Towson edged the Blue Hens in the first game of the three-game set 1-0. The Tigers scored the game's only run in the bottom half of the second inning. Senior catcher/designated hitter Aimee Rosa singled, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Rosa scored on junior left fielder Emily Gould's RBI double, which gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
In the nightcap, the Tigers came back from an early deficit to upend Delaware 4-3. After falling behind 1-0, Towson rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Towson loaded the bases on a singles by Rosa and senior first baseman Stephanie Fudurich, and sophomore third baseman Stef Streets reaching base on a throwing error. Consecutive RBI singles by Gould and freshman catcher Meaghan Clark gave Towson a 2-1 lead. The Tigers added one more run as Fudurich score after sophomore center fielder Kim Lempa reached on an infield error.
Senior pitcher Claire Rietmann-Grout allowed the two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at three. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Towson scored the go-ahead run. Senior right fielder Nina Navarro was hit by a pitch, then reached second after Rosa singled. Streets RBI single brought Navarro home and gave Towson the 4-3 victory.
Towson rode that momentum from the Saturday come from behind win into the series-finale on Sunday, beating Delaware 9-1. Trailing 1-0, Towson responded with a six-run third inning.
RBI singles by Lempa and Navarro gave Towson a 3-1 lead. A three-run home run by Rosa pushed the lead to 6-1. The game was shortened to five runs after the Tigers opened an eight run lead.
"This weekend, we knew we had to at least take the series from Delaware. After playing the first two games pretty close but winning, we knew that we could take it to [Delaware] and earn the sweep," Rosa said. "Our bats came alive in the second game. We were hitting like we should have the first two games and continued our solid defense."
