The Tigers will be heading into the CAA Tournament with a full head of steam after an 11-8 victory over conference rival Old Dominion (4-8, 0-6) in their regular season finale in Norfolk, Va. The win came after a hard-fought loss at William and Mary in which the Tigers were defeated 14-13
"It was important to come back [with a win] after a loss like that [on Friday]," Towson head coach Missy Doherty said.
Junior Hillary Fratzke and sophomore midfielder Nikki Marcinik continued their strong offensive outputs, each scoring three goals in the win. With the score tied at two in the first half, Fratzke and sophomore Steph Taylor scored 29 seconds apart to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead with 17:24 left in the opening half. Old Dominion was not to be outdone, though as they responded with five of the last six goals in the half to take a 7-5 lead.
The Tigers came out in the second half on fire, putting together a string of four goals in the first 12 minutes of play to take a 9-7 lead for sophomore goalie Casey Lean.
Lean replaced senior starter Mandy Corry late in the first half and easily made the lead stand up to notch her third victory of the year. The Monarchs were only able to get six second-half shots as the Tigers took advantage of their early-half firepower and outscored the Monarchs 6-1 in the second period.
In the victory, Fratzke became only the ninth player in Towson history to score at least 50 goals in a season.
She finished the regular season with 52 goals and 23 assists in only 16 games after being named one of 18 finalists for the Tewaaraton Award, given each year to the top men's and women's lacrosse player in the country.
The Tigers (11-5, 5-2 CAA) will now wait to see where the conference tournament will be held. The team with the best conference record will host the CAA tournament, and Doherty said her team will be ready to play.
"I think the kids are really prepared," Doherty said. "This is the fastest team I've ever coached, they are a competitive group. They have stepped up and we just want to compete hard. There are so many good teams in our conference and we just need to be ready to compete with them."
