Johnston threw a complete game three-hitter in the series opener as the Tigers defeated the Cavaliers 2-0. Johnston struck out one and had no walks. The shutout was Johnston's third of the season.
Towson scored both of the game's runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior first baseman Stephanie Fudurich singled then advanced to second on a Virginia wild pitch, followed by a junior Emily Gould walk. After a sophomore third baseman Stef Streets groundout, freshman catcher Meaghan Clark delivered a two-out two-RBI single, scoring Fudurich and Gould.
The Tiger defense backed up the pitching effort with a solid defensive output. Towson committed just one error and only one Virginia base runner reached past first the remainder of the game.
Rietmann-Grout gave up six hits and two earned runs while striking out three in seven innings work as the Tigers completed the two-game sweep, beating Virginia 5-2 in the series finale. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Towson responded with two runs of their own. After senior right fielder Nina Navarro flew out, senior catcher Aimee Rosa singled through the left side. Fudurich then gave Towson a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run to right-center field; her second home run of the season.
After a Virginia run tied the score at two in the top of the fifth, Towson answered with three in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Tigers their eventual margin of victory.
Sophomore center fielder Kim Lempa opened the inning with a single, followed by a sophomore second baseman Mindy Bean single. Lempa and Bean both advanced on a freshman short stop Sammi DiPompo sacrifice bunt. Navarro then cleared the bases with a two RBI triple giving her a team-high 29 on the season. Navarro then scored on a Rosa RBI single, making the score 5-2.
"These two wins against UVA being non-conference were some big wins, its getting near the end of the season and being a senior it's always good to finish strong," Fudurich said. "Hopefully it can build some momentum going into the last two conference weekends."
The sweep brings Towson's record to 30-20 on the season, with a 10-3 mark at home. It is the ninth time in 10 seasons the Tigers have reached the 30 with plateau. Towson returns to action this afternoon at home for a doubleheader against Rider before resuming conference play this weekend at Drexel.
