Boarman and Field Hockey: When long time head coach Lynette Mitzel abruptly resigned last June, assistant Michelle Webber was promoted to lead the program. Under the tutelage of the first-year acting head coach, the Tigers finished 8-11. Despite starting 1-5 in the CAA, Towson rallied to win their final two regular season games and qualified for the postseason for the second time in three years.
With their 17th selection in this year's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, the Baltimore Orioles selected Towson outfielder Brian Conley, Friday.
Conley is the first Tiger to be drafted since 2005, when Casper Wells and Shane Justis were selected by the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively.
"It's always been a dream of mine to play professional baseball, especially for the team I grew up with," Conley said. "I was just kind of sitting around waiting for it to happen, and when it finally did it was just really exciting."
I wanted to wrap up 'In This Corner' with a year-in-review edition that concerned all sports - something that could sum up the year with one common thread. I sat and thought about the past nine months in the sports world, and only one glaring similarity occurred throughout.
Late-season heroics allowed Towson to advance to their first postseason tournament since 2005. The Tigers dropped the first game of the CAA Tournament to Hofstra, 3-1, but rebounded upending Georgia State, 5-4. However, the Tigers' season came to an end as they fell short of the championship game, losing once again to Hofstra, 4-2.
Most disappointing team in NBA playoffs? Daniel: Well, obviously the most disappointing team can't really be one that's still in the playoffs. The most depressing team to watch this postseason was Phoenix. So much was made of acquiring the "Big Diesel" to help Amare Stoudamire and Steve Nash, but in the end, the three of them couldn't even win a game.
Clutch performances all around allowed the Tigers to take the series finale, 7-2, Saturday against the Georgia State Panthers and advance to the CAA Tournament. Two perfect innings of relief by junior right-hander Josh Squatrito gave him his tenth save of the season and contributed to Towson's win.
Though the final score read 21-9, in favor of the Syracuse Orange over the Tigers, it was not indicative of head coach Missy Doherty's assessment of the team's play. "I'm really happy with the effort," Doherty said. "Syracuse has great shooters and unfortunately we couldn't put our shots away,"
Not willing to be swept for the series on their home turf, the Blue Hens of Delaware earned a 12-10 victory over Towson in the series finale on Sunday. The win came after the Tigers had already clinched the weekend series Saturday.
