Director of the Tiger Marching Band John Miliauskas has begun work toward a new University fight song, starting with an open call for a new melody this fall.
"We are gearing the contest toward music people and alumni of the music department," Miliauskas said. "Some of the faculty has said they already have tried writing out some melodies."
The first competition is only for the melody without lyrics, Miliauskas said. The winner will receive a $1,000 prize. During the spring semester, a competition will be held to write the lyrics to the new fight song. This contest will be open to all entries including current students.
"To write the melody, you need musical training," Miliauskas said. "Anybody is welcome to help write the words. It doesn't have to be a music person. A math major could do it."
The change comes after several years of efforts to educate students of the current fight song, "Fight On Towson Tigers." Now, Miliauskas said it's time to transition to a new theme that is "something original to Towson University."
"Five or six years ago, no one knew the fight song. It wasn't as prevalent," he said. "Even though we have made good strides in recent years, now is the time to introduce a new song."

Seriously?,
After five years of having people learn what the fight song is, incorporating it into the sports and campus culture and we are gonna just scrap it?? Really? No wonder we can't have any traditions at Towson everytime something comes close its scraped because it's not "original" or up-to-date. (Continued…)

I think this is a good idea as long as they put the effort into educating ALL of the students.

Actually- the fight song was scrapped because it was ILLEGAL. The school never actually obtained the copyright law for use of U of Arizona's "Bear Down, Arizona" which is the same theme as "Fight on. (Continued…)
