Unlike the Glen Towers that line up in alphabetical order, the first two residence halls in the West Village now have distinct identities.

Following a naming contest that began in November 2007, the theme for the new West Village is "Famous Marylanders.

Midway through the summer, University administrators are already calling the pilot trimester program a success.
The state-funded pilot that allows Towson to offer 10-week courses through the summer in addition to traditional 5-week and 7-week courses is an effort to attract more students to earn credits during non-peak times of the year.

Permits discounted for hybrids

Hybrid cars already provide drivers a break at the pump. Now, they will offer University students and faculty a break on their parking permit.

Beginning this fall, students, faculty and staff that drive hybrid cars will get a 50 percent discount off the normal parking permit price.

Towson pair take adventure titles

After winning the United States Adventure Racing Association 2008 Collegiate Nationals in May, Joshua LaSov is already training for his next race in November.

"You always have to think, 'OK, do I take this trail to this coordinate because it's shorter but more hilly or do I take this trail to this checkpoint where it's a mile longer but less elevation change,'" the Towson senior and adventure racer said.

TU receives national security award

Towson University has been re-designated as a Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education for the next five years, by the Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency, according to a release.

This is the third time Towson has received this honor, following heavy competition and strict federal guideline criteria, provost James Clements said.

On May 21, 22 and 23, Towson University awarded 2,589 degrees at the 143rd Commencement exercises.

Amidst the accolades of deserving degree recipients, the ceremonies marked the 50th anniversary of graduate education at Towson, as well as a benchmark for degrees awarded.

Justin Beckenheimer didn't watch many movies while growing up.

"I kind of still don't like watching movies," he said. "I don't really like the Hollywood blockbusters. I saw 'Iron Man,' I thought that sucked. I saw 'Indiana Jones,' I thought that sucked."

Clark looks ahead after arrest

Eric Clark made it out of the inner city of Philadelphia, where he was more likely to end up dead or in prison than on a college campus. But as he inched closer to graduating from Towson University, he found himself sitting in a jail cell anyway.

"While I was sitting in that cell, I was just thinking for the first time in my life my dreams may never come true," Clark, a former starting cornerback for the Towson Tigers, said.

TU alum Engelke taken in MLL draft

The Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse selected Towson alumnus Jonathan Engelke with 40th overall selection in the 2008 draft in May.

Engelke is the eighth player in program history to be drafted. A Long Island native, the crafty attack finished his career with 113 goals ranking third on Towson's all-time list.

Babe Ruth's granddaughter recently began a movement to convince Major League Baseball to retire the number 3 in the Babe's honor. The number has been retired by the Yankees, but that's not good enough for Ruth Tosetti.
