Without contract, Hermann optimistic

No deal in hand does little to deter athletic director's plans for Tigers

Towson Athletic Director Mike Hermann’s contract has officially expired as of June 30.

However, having an athletic director without a contract is not as rare as it may seem, according to the University Counsel.

The state’s attorney general has to approve any high level contract and Towson has had previous athletic directors without contracts.

Hermann, who signed a three year contract on March 7, 2006, after spending time in the athletic departments of Xavier and Niagara, is not at all worried about his job security.

“One of the things I really like about my job at Towson is that I serve on the President’s cabinet,” Hermann said. “So while I’m not a vice president, in some cases I am treated as one.”

Hermann points this out because an institution is not obligated to have those holding higher ranking positions under contract.

Instead, they are treated as regular exempt employees, which under the University System of Maryland states that employment is on an “at-will basis”, meaning that either the employee or the University may terminate the relationship at any time.

Hermann doesn’t see that happening anytime soon.

“The contract was provided to me when I made the move to Towson,” Hermann said. “Now that I am here and have a working relationship with the institution, I think the need for a contract is less.

I’ve not pushed that issue. I have a great working relationship with the President and we are midway through trying to make some change within our athletics program.

We have lots of exciting things ahead of us and I have no interest in going anywhere else and no indication that I should be looking to go anywhere else.”
