Many students on campus were in attendance for Peterson Toscano’s talk on Monday evening. Toscano spoke about his 17-year experience with ex-gay therapy, recalling his terrifying encounter of three exorcisms that attempted to shock him out of being gay.
An important feature of Peterson Toscano’s talk centered on his Web site that he and a friend created to share their failed attempts at the “de-gay” experience.
Beyondexgay.com provides both virtual and actual support for ex-gay survivors.
The site provides articles, narratives, links to other sites, a list of written resources, original artwork and poetry to help people cope with ex-gay survival.
Freshman Rushell Medley said she visited the Web site and enjoyed reading Toscano’s poetry.
Since Toscano is a theatrical performer, he entertained the crowd with a skit from his one-person play, “Doin’ Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House.” Both comedic and informative, Toscano’s presentation was a well-received event to start National Coming Out Week, according to students.
