Despite a failed attempt to produce a photo of students spelling out “Towson” at a previous Tigerfest, the Student Government Association decided to give the photo a second chance for this year’s Homecoming with the human spelling of “TU.”
SGA director of student groups Abby Campbell had been approached by outreach specialist Barry Evans about trying the project again.
“I told him I would try to work it out, and I just got all the [SGA] directors on board… and we just made it happen,” Campbell said. “It was no particular group that was here, we just wanted all of campus to be involved.”
The plan for the previous picture was to spell out “Towson,” but because of the poor turnout last time, the new idea was to only form the letters “TU.” Campbell was pleased with the turnout.
“I’m just very excited, [and] I’m so glad it happened. I just want to thank everyone for coming out.”
The SGA was able to assemble more than 300 students and staff on Wednesday to participate in the University’s first TU spirit photo.
There are arrangements being made so students will be able to purchase the picture, but Campbell did not know exactly how Towson plans to use it.
“It’s a University-owned photo, it’s probably going to be a picture on lots of the brochures and pamphlets, I imagine,” she said.
Sophomore exercise science major Jillian Dalton said she was excited to be a part of something that was a first for the school.
“Well, I wanted to be in the picture because it’s something that all colleges should do,” she said. “I was surprised that Towson hadn’t done one. It was exciting because I feel like Towson doesn’t usually have that many people get into school spirit like they did here.”
Doc the Tiger also made an appearance, posing for pictures and getting the crowd energized.
“I was very excited to get my picture taken with Doc,” junior Rickie Furline said. “Doc’s always a fun-loving character, he’s very spirited...”
